Callan is a great name.
Personally I've always found it difficult to take Oscar seriously as an actual human name, as I've known far too many canine Oscars.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 27/09/2024 23:00

Callan. Though it looks like call An.
Kalen?

Bbdm1984 · 28/09/2024 00:01

@Babyboyno2 I have a Calhan Joseph here who is 17 and love the name he gets called Cal by everyone

loropianalover · 28/09/2024 00:02

Callan. Definitely don’t spell it Kalen!

Noah is a lovely name but just so popular now.

Babyboyno2 · 28/09/2024 00:12

@Daisybuttercup12345 going for Callan “cal-an”
@Bbdm1984 i really love it
@loropianalover always loved Noah but agree it is very common and off putting I like something abit different

Never ever had Alan... he does sometimes get callum but generally from older folk that mishear as we clearly call him cal-an. He did get callahan at school by his mates (due to my way of spelling) which I was gutted about because I had actually wanted to call him callahan

Babyboyno2 · 28/09/2024 10:15

@Bbdm1984 aw the odd Callum wouldn’t annoy me anyways a lot of names these days need corrected . Thanks. Callahan is lovely I also like Conlan . Just can’t shake Callan

Oscar. A classic and cute nicknames for when young. Like Noah too but I'd avoid as it is so, so popular.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 28/09/2024 12:17

Noah or Oscar, although every other boy dog round here is called Oscar (the others being Alfie). I don't like your other names, sorry.

Yeahnoforsure · 28/09/2024 16:31

Noah .

Babyboyno2 · 03/10/2024 15:17

Opinions on “ Aidan” ??
I like Aodhán spelling but aware its pronunced different even although all Aodháns I know pronounce it “ay din”

Yeahnoforsure · 03/10/2024 19:43

Aiden's ok, a nice name that's been quite popular, but I wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce Aodhan. There are at least 5 ways to spell Aiden ( if you wanted to be different instead of culturally correct) all 5 are not so different as to cause someone to misspeak the name.

okayhescereal · 03/10/2024 19:47

Out of those Noah is my fave. Have loved it since watching The Notebook. Unfortunately every 4th child seems to be called it near me (with the others being Oscar or Arlo!) which put me off using it personally. But still think it's a beautiful, timeless name

Yeahnoforsure · 03/10/2024 19:57

My favourite choice is Noah too.
I don't know many children, or adults actually, with the name Noah.
Oscar not a favourite, and Arlo, never knew anyone with that name and I like it.

Sadly Noah , while lovely and Biblical isn’t remotely timeless - how many middle aged or older Noah’s does anyone know? (it was barely used until a few decades ago).

Aidan may be much more timeless - especially in Ireland and N. Ireland, I’ve heard of quite a few older as well as younger ones there. Personally I like it a lot, it feels like an Irish classic to me. But only you know whether you can get away with the Gaelic spelling OP - certainly in the rest of the UK I think it would get mangled.

okayhescereal · 03/10/2024 20:00

@IamnotwhouthinkIam interesting! Me misusing the word perhaps. To me if something has been around since the Bible times and is used today that's pretty timeless.

Though my nans elderly neighbour was called Noah so maybe that's skewing me as well.

Babyboyno2 · 03/10/2024 21:37

Would probably go with Aidan if I was picking it. Noah is lovely but it suits a child just to me, couldn’t imagine an adult that’s just me, do love it though. liking Callan, Aidan & Ruairí

Really cool that you know an older Noah 😁 @okayhescereal - the only older Noah I’ve ever heard of is ER actor Noah Wyle, the ones I’ve met in RL have been in their 20’s or younger (and the stats seem to back that up, but there’s always going to be anomalies !)

Yeah people often seem to use timeless as interchangeable with classic or historical- but really timeless is any name that’s unlikely to date - either because you get loads of the name of all different ages because it’s always been popular (Elizabeth, William, James, Thomas etc) or alternatively the name is not used that often so it’s still hard to guess how old someone with that name is (basically most names that have never been in the Top 50/100).

Many people don’t care about having a timeless name - but personally I get nervous that names like Noah (which seem lovely to us now) could be the Karen or Kevin etc of 50 years time. If they suddenly drop down the chart they could become the unfair middle aged meme/joke of the future 😢
