Thanks everyone I can imagine calling the name Callan etc..
@IamnotwhouthinkIam from NI shouldn’t be to much of a problem ( hopefully not)
liking Callan James (although James very common middle name which is a wee bit of putting) and Callan Joseph I think is lovely too

Callan Joseph is beautiful!

Babyboyno2 · 26/09/2024 01:12

Oscar
Callan

Noah/ Cian

Sleepnplay · 26/09/2024 07:05

I really like Oscar, but Callan Joseph is lovely also.

TheDogDoesntLikeRain · 26/09/2024 07:48

Oscar.

I've never heard of Callan but think it may be mistaken for Callum

AnonymousArmadillo · 26/09/2024 07:50

I have a Cian so I’m biased but it’s definitely the best one.

Jessieshome · 26/09/2024 10:14

I love Callan, not sure I've heard it before but really like it.

Noah and Oscar are nice names but fairly popular, particularly Oscar and aren't as interesting as Callan. Callan to me seems a very strong name, Oscar and Noah are a bit cutesy and wishy washy (in my opinion of course 🙂).

Cian - not entirely sure how to pronounce this.

howshouldibehave · 26/09/2024 10:23

I teach in a primary school and we have huge numbers of Noahs in Early years and KS1-that would put me off as they are all known as Noah B or Noah Smith to distinguish them. Oscar is quite popular but not nearly as much-I do really like that though.

I’m less keen on the other two and wonder if people would struggle to spell them. They might get misheard as Ian and Allan.

If you live in Ireland though, that’s different!

Babyboyno2 · 26/09/2024 12:05

@Jessieshome I feel the same I think Callan is lovely for a child and older man and it’s different, there’s also “Calan” but think I prefer the 2 Ls what you think? Cian would be Irish version of Kane, but I’m not as set on it compared to the others

@howshouldibehave thank you that’s good to know about Noah and Oscar really nice names but near sure both are in top 10. We are NI but hopefully once corrected they will remember “Cal-an”

Oscar

shoopshoopdedoo · 26/09/2024 21:42

I’ve not heard of Callan but I’m growing to like it after reading your thread! Easy to pronounce, more unusual than Oscar (my original vote) but not whacky. Love “Cal” too.

I’d definitely spell it Callan. I think Calan is potentially more likely to trip people up if they’re unfamiliar with it. I’d instinctively say “Kay-lan” with this spelling.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/09/2024 21:50

Yep, I agree with the pp. I’m not sure about N. Ireland but Callan is Top 100 popular in Scotland at least - so might be better to stick to that spelling since it should hopefully be a bit more familiar to people and less likely to be mispronounced.

Babyboyno2 · 26/09/2024 22:28

@shoopshoopdedoo @IamnotwhouthinkIam thank yous near sure Callan is his name I can really imagine it compared to anything else so far

The more I hear it, the more I’m growing to love Callan - great choice 😊

TwirlBar · 26/09/2024 22:40

Cian would be Irish version of Kane

It's not@Babyboyno2, they're unrelated names.

Babyboyno2 · 26/09/2024 22:43

@TwirlBar i was saying for pronunciation any Cian I know is pronounced “Kane”

Babyboyno2 · 26/09/2024 22:47

@TwirlBar maybe not the best example of pronunciation more like key an

Oh right sorry, I thought you meant they were the same name like Séamus/James etc.

It's more Key-un where I am, emphasis on the Key, but I'm at the other end of the country to you so the pronunciation's probably slightly different.

Babyboyno2 · 26/09/2024 23:23

@TwirlBar bad wording on my side. A lot of names are mid pronounced here also

I definitely prefer the 2 'l's. I'd pronounce it slightly differently with 1 'l', a bit more harshly. It really is a great name 😊

Kane/Cane (pronounced in my English accent) is the first murderer in the bible, I don't like that at all.

DeepBlueSeas · 27/09/2024 09:41

I’m liking Callan the best. Love Cal for short - very cool.

This is how we say Cian (we’re English but DH’s family is Irish). The English version is Kian apparently.

rainbowstardrops · 27/09/2024 15:17

I like Cian and Callan. Noah and Oscar are too well used for me. Callan Joseph is gorgeous.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/09/2024 15:37

I love Callan, also like Noah, but not sure if that is a bit popular.
