Help! Punchy, unusual French girl names

vowelsandall · 22/09/2024 22:05

Baby girl is here and nameless, so I need your help please!! I need a name that fits the following criteria:

  • punchy (by that I mean something that has some energy and strength to it)
  • something that is not commonly used in the UK, but ideally something that isn't considered made up either. It would be great if it's something that isn't really dated in France too
  • something that is French, or at least pronounceable in French. I don't mind if the pronunciation is a little different in English and French

Any ideas? I would be most grateful!

Aude-Elyse

I had never seen or heard of Maëlys before. It looks lovely written down but I went to YouTube and got a pronunciation of it.
I thought it would be Mayleese but it's Myleese.
I prefer Mayleese.

Neither of those are the right pronunciation. The ë indicates that the e is pronounced separately from the a, not a dipthong. So it's ma.e.lis

I agree that Corisande (French pronunciation - Coh-ree-sohnd-uh) is good (the 'oh' both times as in 'coffee'.) English version less so.
Melisande ditto.

Maude would also work - plus names such as Vanessa, Clarissa. Or perhaps Ludivine.

Look also at Breton names, such as Gaelle (Ga-elle), Gwenivar, Azenor...
*Sorry - can't do accents/diacritics.

What about Aurelie? You could also do a more popular Marguerite!

I suggested Aurelie on the thread last Monday.
It's beautiful.

Coco, Zara, Zita?

Pretty sure it's quite dated to the 80s perhaps in France, like my name is here. People think it's the equivalent of Aurelia here which is having a moment.

Lol.

OP: nothing too old-fashioned please.

MNers who once went to France on a school exchange in 2003: how about Brenda, Sue, June, Kathleen, Marjorie

AuxArmesCitoyens · 28/09/2024 15:55

Best suggestion so far by a country mile is Anouk. Girls under 7 or so I know: Charline, Léa, Yara, Sydney, Aya, Méline, Julia, Sirine, Alicia, Léonore, and about 3000 Emmas. Coco means communist, perhaps not ideal.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 28/09/2024 16:56

Also people straight up making up names. Ember, Brielle and roux are not names. and ça sent le fauve = it smells like a sweaty jockstrap

Napoleon.

Echomama · 30/09/2024 11:52

Esme (esmay) is pronounced well in france.
There are a few ilyana's
Clara, selene, cedia
I'll have to ask what other names my kids have in school. They are veeeerryyy different to what us English would consider a typical French name , but that might just be our area 😁

Sorrelia · 30/09/2024 14:00

@vowelsandall what did you end up choosing for your DD? :)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/09/2024 14:03

I rather like Clothilde.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 01/10/2024 09:14

I looked at the coat pegs at primary yesterday. The first three were Olivia, Gaïa, and April.

NameChange30 · 01/10/2024 10:24

April? That's unusual for a French girl. I know an Abril but she is Spanish!

(Also know a little Gaïa who is French)

MilesOfCarpetTiles · 01/10/2024 10:34

Sylvie or Delphine would get my vote

dollybird · 01/10/2024 10:54

Severine

AuxArmesCitoyens · 01/10/2024 11:40

Yes, it is unusual. Point is current French naming trends are all over the place and lots of traditional girl names are dying on their arse. OP would be more on point calling her kid Maddyson than Séverine.

Edit: just looked it up: Séverine peaked in 1975 meaning average age is now 49. It was used no more than 5 times a year in the past decade. April was used 191 times in 2022.
