it's about the only name DH and I can agree on for our first (due in 6 weeks) and is also the maiden name of my friend who introduced me to DH in the first place

he is Welsh and has a typical Welsh surname but i am English and it is likely we will stay living in England so wanted something to give him a sense of heritage but...

recently i have seen that Melina Messenger has a son called Morgan plus i think Bianca's son on Eastenders is also Morgan

Am I thinking too hard on this one?? Why is it that boys names are so hard to choose - no contest for a girl if we ever have one she will be Rhiannon

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Fillyjonk · 20/04/2008 19:19

its a good welsh name

its also fine for english speakersm unlike, say, iolo, or gruffydd (sp)

NotQuiteCockney · 20/04/2008 19:19

There's a Morgan on a new US TV show (Chuck).

I think it's a nice name, really, but it might be a bad association?

lackaDAISYcal · 20/04/2008 19:19

I tend to lean towards more traditional names. My cousin has a morgan (because she likes the drink ), but she is a girl.

lackaDAISYcal · 20/04/2008 19:20

is it a traditional welsh name? I didn't realsie that

Fillyjonk · 20/04/2008 19:20

its also pretty common round here (cardiff)

I think its a great name for a welsh-english child, it works in both cultures well.

Tigerschick · 20/04/2008 19:21

I went to school with a Morgan and he was really nice.

As always, in baby name threads, I'll say 'if you like it then go for it'!

Fillyjonk · 20/04/2008 19:21

it means something to do with the sea, I expect. by the sea or something. I shall google

WendyWeber · 20/04/2008 19:22

It's a traditional Welsh surname like Jones or Evans or Davies I think, daisy.

I like it, but I have never known a Morgan (and I've known a few) who wasn't naughty.

policywonk · 20/04/2008 19:22

Oooh I think it's a fab name

EffiePerine · 20/04/2008 19:22

Nice name. It can be used as a girl's name as well, but I think of it as a (Welsh) boy's name.

TheApprentice · 20/04/2008 19:23

It is popular for a boy and a girl right now in Scotland. I taught in a class where there were two Morgans - one male and one female! (Both lovely children too!)

Fillyjonk · 20/04/2008 19:23

ah it means bright sea, its from another word

and is both welsh AND old english. thats pretty cool, surely, for a welsh-english child?

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/04/2008 19:23

Isn't it a Scottish name? I knew a Scot called Morgan.

I think it's actually Bianca's daughter who is called Morgan isn't it, as it does seem to be unisex name?

talkingmongoose · 20/04/2008 19:24

Nope, sounds like a 'surname name' tn me - Mason, Brandon, Taylor, mckenzie etc, and they're usually quite chavvy.

spicemonster · 20/04/2008 19:24

It was my grandad's middle name. I like it

My sister used it though so I chose Rhys instead

Fillyjonk · 20/04/2008 19:25

I know lots of baby morgans

is it reviving, like henry and albert?

other "old" names that seem to be around a lot are eira and dewi

ButterflyBessie · 20/04/2008 19:26

I love it, but the thought that it is on Eastenders puts me off and no way would I use it now.

Was my dad's name though

ButterflyBessie · 20/04/2008 19:27

I thought female version was Morgana as in Morgana le Fey

LobstersLass · 20/04/2008 19:28

Morgan is a lovely Welsh name, and has the benefit of being easily pronounced by English folk, unlike my favourite name which is Llywelyn!

onebatmother · 20/04/2008 21:02

My ds also has an Eastender's name ! Still love it though. PW is that one more freaky coincidence? (ok, not that freaky)

Spidermama · 20/04/2008 21:04

LOVE the name.
I know a Morgan who's a teenager by now. Have known him since he was little. Fab name. Not many about either but not likely to upset anyone by being too outlandish.

choccypig · 20/04/2008 21:07

Lovely lovely name - trouble is LOTS of people agree, so if you want something a bit out of the oridnary, you are too late. I think Morgan Tsvangairi (sp) brought it to prominence about 8 years ago.

Similar names are Mason and Miller, also quite popular around here in the propsperous South East.

choccypig · 20/04/2008 21:10

That would be prosperous of course.

When I was a youngster in Wales, ALL children with the surname Morgan were known as "Moggy"

onebatmother · 20/04/2008 21:14

Me neither - but v annoying school-gate-mother took huge satisfaction in letting me know...
Never mind. I smile. I lie low. I think. I smile again. Then - when she is least expecting it - I will act.
