Honest thoughts on Hazel and Rose

Hi all,

We like these two names (not together) but would like to know how they are received - I know it’s what we like that counts but I found it helpful in the past to use MN as a sounding board for a name as it revealed some connotations and unfortunate rhyming words we hadn’t considered!

I don’t love how popular Rose is but I also think it’s classic and timeless which appeals. But maybe it’s having a moment actually as it’s a common middle name. Hazel: I like the link to nature (not that it’s important we have that) and think it’s cute but also ages well.

If anyone has any other short (max two syllables) girl names you think we might also like I’d love to hear them! We clearly like a z sound going by these two names.

Thanks in advance!

I like them both but especially Hazel, because it's less common. I know a baby Hazel, I think it's a lovely name that works for a baby and adult.

There is also
Zinnia
Primrose

Both have the Z sound

MistyF · 16/09/2024 11:43

Jasmine is obvious suggestion
I really like Hazel, but not keen on Rose. I prefer Rosalie, Rosamund, etc to just Rose.

MrsSunshine2b · 16/09/2024 12:02

I think they are both very pretty and Rose isn't common as a first name, only as a middle name.

My DD's best friend is named Hazel. It's a lovely name which suits her perfectly.

JustDeserts · 16/09/2024 12:08

Hazel has a nice sound IMO.
Rose is overused as a middle name but OK, if a bit weak, as a first name. Might end up being Rosie, if that bothers you.

I don't like Rosalie or Rosemary but Rosalind is pretty. I like Ros as a diminutive.

shoopshoopdedoo · 16/09/2024 13:56

I love Rose! It’s very popular as a middle name but I don’t think it’s used as often as a first name. Not sure why, because it’s great!

Hazel is nice enough but not as classic and elegant as Rose, in my opinion.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 16/09/2024 13:59

Hazel: lovely.
Rose: dull. I much, much prefer Rosa.

OopsieeDaisy · 16/09/2024 14:03

I seem to be in a minority on MN of people who cannot stand the name Hazel. It just conjures up an image of a frumpy middle aged woman for me 🤷‍♀️ Rose is beautiful, as are Rosa and Rosalie. Or how about:
Daisy
Maisie
Zara

Hazel: lovely.
Rose: dull. I much, much prefer Rosa.

Me too.

ButterAsADip · 16/09/2024 14:06

I know more Hazels than Roses. I love Hazel. Rose is an overdone middle name but nice for first. I’d go Hazel but there’s not much in it for me!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/09/2024 14:13

Rose will become Rosie if you're ok with that

Bgfe · 16/09/2024 14:16

Two of my all time favourites. I’d pick the one that goes better with surname.

Honestly, I don’t like Hazel - it just seems clumpy and I don’t think of nature, I think of the eye colour! Haze for short? No.

Also, after hanging round on the baby name boards a while, you can absolutely spot when a name is going to be a trendy flash in the pan. Violet is a good example - from absolutely nowhere suddenly it was the in thing. I guess all the other flower names had been done to death and so there we were with it, but let’s face it, ‘Vi’ isn’t the loveliest and it will go back down in popularity as fast as it came up. Hazel feels the same, it’s never been that popular because it’s pretty marmite really. So it’s going to be one of those names which sounds fresh for a couple of years then falls back down the lists… I would think it will definitely date her to the 2020s.

Rose is lovely, so it’s a perennial favourite, but that makes it dull. The opposite problem!

Moreteaandchocolate · 16/09/2024 16:00

Both are really lovely! Rose is more of a timeless classic (the Elizabeth of the flower names!) I actually love Rosie as a nn.

Hazel is a little more fresh and modern sounding to me (despite being a traditional name). It could date, but many names do, and it would be boring if we used the same names for every generation! I think my favourite is Hazel personally 😊

Iris is another nice flower name that sounds quite fresh with a vintage vibe (no z sound though!)
Zoe is one of my favourite “Z” names - it has a fun yet classic feel to me.

Joolsin · 16/09/2024 16:04

Both are beautiful, though I do prefer Rosa to Rose.

Firsttimebabymummy · 16/09/2024 16:43

Genuinely really like them both, especially Hazel

AgainandagainandagainSS · 16/09/2024 16:47

love both but would go for Hazel as it’s unique and can’t really be shortened/made twee and nasty.

RainyJuly87 · 16/09/2024 16:47

Both beautiful names

aveline161 · 16/09/2024 16:49

Ha made me smile as my mother and I are Hazel Rosemary and Rosemary Elizabeth so lots of Z sounds going on, one of us born 1950 one 1985 will leave you to guess which is which

AgainstRegulations · 16/09/2024 16:50

They’re both beautiful.

aveline161 · 16/09/2024 16:52

P.s. And yes Rosemary is always known as Rose

Jessieshome · 16/09/2024 16:56

Personally, I really don't like the name Hazel, I find it very ugly, a sort of Mrs Trunchball type character springs to mind (sorry Mrs Trunchball). It gets suggested a lot on Mumsnet and many seem to like it so perhaps I am in the minority but I find it really unpleasant, I'm sorry!

Rose, is possibly the most beautiful flower in the world. It's a beautiful name in my opinion. I think it is extremely popular as a middle name, and although I've known a couple of Rosies, who are adults now, the only Rose as a first name I knew was an elderly lady.

I'd choose Rose a billlion times over Hazel!

Snowdrops17 · 16/09/2024 16:57

Not a fan of either rose is a little old woman's name to me .

Both gorgeous names!

StressedQueen · 16/09/2024 18:04

Love both. Both are very pretty. I actually have never met anyone with the first name "Rose" - lots of them are generally middle names. And only ever met one Hazel!
