Yeah, I know what you mean. Boys' names are difficult!

Octocat · 24/09/2024 10:57

I just went back upthread to see if anyone had suggested Iarla, and saw that you'd originally liked it. I don't think it's difficult to pronounce - Ear La. It's a nice name to say.

I love Iarla.

🎵Donnacha want me baby? Donnacha, woooo wooo hooo hoooo

First thing that came to mind!

kc92 · 24/09/2024 11:03

Love Donnacha or Iarla. Eanna or Tadhg are also my fave Irish names.

deeahgwitch · 24/09/2024 11:03

I like Donnacha but prefer Tarlach.
I like Thady but really dislike Theo.
Tiernan or Breifne are lovely too.

But that makes no sense if you know how to pronounce it...Dun-a-ka approximately (really the ch bit is pronounced as in loch rather than lock).

Babyboyno2 · 24/09/2024 11:18

Thanks everyone, I do love Iarla and Callan (Irish & Scottish) , Don’t get the donnacha connections maybe when written out but when saying it I don’t get the connection

But that's the point, people don't know how to pronounce it

Everyone in Ireland and Irish people will know how to pronounce it, so that's not true.

And anyone who has been told!

WrongSortOfPoster · 24/09/2024 14:14

In theory. Real life isn't that simple.

Siblingnamehelp · 24/09/2024 14:17

I find Daithi and Donnnacha harsh and ugly. Dreadful names. Up there with Tadhg. Darragh is the nicest of the list in my opinion.

WrongSortOfPoster · 24/09/2024 14:26

I like Tadhg.

I'm sure there must be a nicer way to say this.

Babyboyno2 · 24/09/2024 14:59

@Siblingnamehelp do you like any Irish names? Open to suggestion, they were just potential options none feel “right” just yet

Of course, and in my first post I put that. Irish people would know and of course I would ask how it was pronounced and get it correct from them onwards.

Doesn't change first thought for most English speakers.

I'm not being mean, just honestly saying on a forum what I thought.

MotherofAllMatriarchs · 24/09/2024 15:04

Donnacha is beautiful to my ears

quoque · 24/09/2024 15:08

Donnacha. There was an annoying Daithí in my class when I was 8, so that's out, although it might depend on the child. Hate Darragh (sorry Darragh Mums out there!) although it somehow becomes acceptable when spelt Daire.

Ferdia?

Siblingnamehelp · 24/09/2024 15:08

@Babyboyno2 I like softer sounding ones
Cian (love)
Daire
Conor
Liam (love)
Cillian
Finn
Ciaran

Pearlgemspark · 24/09/2024 15:09

I don't like Donnacha.

It's a big lumpy name

Octocat · 24/09/2024 15:14

I'd forgotten Colm. And Connall.

Babyboyno2 · 24/09/2024 15:15

@Siblingnamehelp have you ever heard of Callan?
I like Cian also
