'Donnacha wish your girlfriend was hot like me'

I'm not saying this to be rude but on an anonymous forum it is a way of saying what others think.

Obviously if I knew you I'd learn how to pronounce it, and if you are in (I guess ) Ireland it would be fine, and if you love it go for it.

@AllHisCaterpillarFriends

I was trying to work out how to say it politely, but I'll just agree with you!

@Babyboyno2

if he's going to be brought up in England, don't burden him with this song every time someone sees his name written down.

Darragh is my preference out of those, but there are Irish names I prefer over those.

Whatisityoucantface · 11/09/2024 09:48

I really love Donnacha, I considered it. I hadn’t heard Iarla before but I absolutely love that now I’ve looked up the pronunciation (eer-La). Darragh is also a great name.
Lorcan, Ronan, Tadgh and Cormac are firm favourites of mine too

WrongSortOfPoster · 11/09/2024 11:03

How do you say the names? Daithí in particular.
Spelling might be tricky. See Tadhg in previous post.

Babyboyno2 · 11/09/2024 11:26

@Whatisityoucantface thank you, what name did you choose in the end?
@WrongSortOfPoster Da-hee

I’m not familiar with how to pronounce this name and unfortunately, this was my first thought too.

Mine was ' Cleopatra coming at ya'

Liv999 · 11/09/2024 15:42

Don't like Donnacha or Dáithi sorry OP, the rest of your names are OK, Éanna, Eoin Ronan and Rían would be my favourite Irish boys names, I love Freddie too from your list!

Octocat · 11/09/2024 15:50

I'm in NI too. I like Daithí and Darragh. Not a fan of Donnacha.

Also like Iarla, Lorcan and Ferdia. In fact, I think Ferdia might be my favourite out of these.

Love Donnacha and Daithí

Am personally a fan of the F names, Feidhlim, Fionn and Fiachra

I love Fiachra. It was on our shortlist, but we live in England and nobody seemed to know how to pronounce it.

OP, of your options, Daithí is my favourite.

Anabella321 · 11/09/2024 15:57

I love Donnacha and Caolán.

I know an American Donnacha and he gets on grand.

SoftLittleBunnyRabbit · 10/09/2024 23:50

It's a nice name but always reminds me of Donaghadee Grin

The Famous lifeboat that rescued people from the foundering Princess Victoria ferry in 1953 in the teeth of a terrible storm on Irish Sea.

The lifeboat wasn't called Donaghadee. That's where the lifeboat station is.

@AtYourOwnRisk i actually preferred the Donncha spelling aswell when looking it up online. But thought it might of been more “made” up

Edited

Donncha is the more authentic spelling.
In NI won't you got "Donny"?
(Many Northern Irish accents miss out sounds like th, ch in the middle if words. eg Norn Iron.)

Daisybuttercup12345 · 15/09/2024 22:12

None. Sorry.

Firebird83 · 16/09/2024 22:55

I like Darragh and Donnacha.

CockneyWheezer · 16/09/2024 22:56

I like Donnacha. Lovely name.

Darragh is OK, Not a fan of Daithi.

PadstowGirl · 18/09/2024 21:18

I've only ever heard it as a surname. Like Oliver Callan on RTÉ. It's quite nice as a first name though.

FitAt50 · 23/09/2024 23:08

I have an Irish nephew Caolan who gets called Colon all the time because no one can pronounce it when written down..

Who calls him Colon? Fellow-Irish peoole?

FitAt50 · 24/09/2024 07:59

No, non Irish people who see it written down.

No, non Irish people who see it written down.

Well, so what, though? Most people won’t be able to pronounce a name in an unfamiliar language correctly until they hear it said. I have an unusual Irish first name and surname, and spent much of my adult life outside of Ireland, and while everyone I know obviously pronounces it correctly, I’m not going to crumble if a dental receptionist mispronounces it.

Octocat · 24/09/2024 08:27

I’m ambivalent about Callan, but would avoid Calan as I think people would pronounce it Kay-lan.

Octocat · 24/09/2024 08:28

Rossa? Cathal? Jarlath?
