Lola

So following on from my other tread, having done some research it seems Lola is used quite a bit in Spain. Not used as much as Sofia or Lucia.
There is also some different meanings out there and positive meanings not just "woman of sorrows". It's really growing on me and rolls off the tongue.

What are your thoughts on Lola?
Does it sound Spanish enough?
What is your favourite out of Lola, Lucia or Sofia? And which would you pick?

Thank you.

My associations with Lola, in no particular order, would be the Kinks song:

(Well, I'm not dumb, but I can't understand
Why she walks like a woman and talks like a man
Oh, my Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola
Lo-Lo-Lo-Lo-Lola)

Copacabana:

(Her name was Lola/she was a showgirl/with yellow feathers in her hair/and a dress cut down to there)

Lolita

(enough said)

and as a shortening for Dolores, which means sorrows.

So I wouldn’t I’m afraid. Feels quite insubstantial as a name even if you take the associations away. Sofia and Lucia are beautiful.

Viviennemary · 08/09/2024 09:06

Exactly. It's dire. Just don't. Choose a different name.

Viviennemary · 08/09/2024 09:07

Lucia and Sofia are both nice. I like Lucia best but hard to choose.

All of this....
" she tastes just like cherry cola.....L o la lola!"

Literally started singing it as I read your thread title.

TheGriffle · 08/09/2024 09:12

Lucia is a beautiful name. I know a Lola in DD’s class at school. She’s 7. I don’t think of any of the associations above when I hear her name, it’s just her name. I also didn’t associate it as a Spanish name.

TheRozzers · 08/09/2024 09:15

I used to like it but there is

  • the Lola song
  • Charlie and Lola - whiny voice
  • 100 dogs called Lola
  • too much tongue usage required with all those Ls

So it's a no from me

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 09:16

I've taught plenty of Lolas ; its relatively popular. The Kinks and Manilow associations are not of 30 year old parents' generation.

I think of Lola in Atonement, which isn't a good thing either, but I guess it is a 1930s name, therefore, and those names are back in fashion.

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 09:17

Also have taught Lucias. Pronounced in millions of different ways.

All of this ^

Lucia is much much nicer

readyforroundthree · 08/09/2024 09:28

I don't mind Lola, but I prefer Sofia or Lucia just because I think Lola is used a lot.

PP comments about the name Lola reminding them of song that was released 54 years ago means absolutely nothing to this generation of parents.

@FairCity and @SausageRoll2020and @Bigearringsbigsmile
Baby will be brought up in Spain. I've done a lot of research on social media and seen quite a few birth announcements for babies called Lola. So I'm wondering if the association's are just not there in Spain? As they would be in the UK.

Thank you, I think you might be right that the association's aren't there anymore. But also baby will be raised in Spain, and not even sure if the association's are a thing over there?

Ah, might well be different in Spain, sorry, I was answering from a UK perspective. I’m only 40 though and have lots of friends my age still having babies - that song looms very large!

No matter what name you put, there's always going to be someone that says it reminds them of this or reminds them of that. I think all of your suggestions are inoffensive names, for this country anyway. If you are going to be living in Spain do you not have anyone there that you could ask?

spanishsenorita25 · 08/09/2024 10:12

@readyforroundthree unfortunately I don't have anyone I can ask. I'm relocating and don't know anyone. I've searched on social media babies called Lola and there are a good few coming up for Spanish babies born with the name.

That song!! Also, Lolita. So a big No from me.

Sofia is lovely.

theduchessofspork · 08/09/2024 10:33

I like it, it's cute, but I think it's a bit babyish/nick namey - so I'd called her Eloise or Eloisa (both of which work in Spain) nn Lola

Lucia and Sofia are both too overused, I agree

I don't think you can speak for everyone I'm 30 and first thing I thought of was The Kinks song

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 10:41

Indeed, but I am commenting on the fact that there are now plenty of teenage girls called Lola!

RockGirl · 08/09/2024 12:01

Lola is a nickname. If you want to use it, pick a proper name then use Lola as a nickname.

JaxiiTaxii · 08/09/2024 12:03

There's a Lola in my DC2s class and I can't hear it without thinking 'she was a show girl'.

Lucia is lovely.

Etincelle · 08/09/2024 12:06

I'd pick Lola.

I really like it! I think it’s my favourite of your three choices.

I love Sofia too, but it’s very popular and I think Lola is more interesting. I really don’t like Lucia as there are so many ways to pronounce it and I find it a bit too frilly.
