Got this into my top 3. Just curious of how people would pronounce it, is it “REE-ON”

Very badly indeed!

if I HAD to say it & had no opportunity to look it up first yhen

actually, I just looked it up and I'm astounded, that the way I'd say it is what they said. I NEVER get it right & can't even say most Irish names when I'm told how they're pronounced.

Gobsmacked (can't think of a more 'adult' expression.

@Babyboyno2 I love it. It's easy to say & I love how it looks.

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 17:01

It's Ríoghán. Rían is a boy's name and more like Ree-an, and Ríoghán a girl's name.

Rhian is Welsh and a girl's name and is pronounced whichever way you like hence Jimberley comment. RHEE-ann if you're Welsh, not Ree-un and it means maiden/young woman. Not in any way related to the Irish names.

AgnesX · 05/09/2024 17:05

Re-ann.... Along those lines. You've not got a hope in hell of ever having it pronounced or spelled properly.

Notreat · 05/09/2024 17:07

I would guess ree-an. But I would ask how it was pronounced and go with that

BarbaraHoward · 05/09/2024 17:12

I'm Irish and have never seen it before, but would guess Ree-awn (and would also guess that there should be a fada on the i).

There's lots of lovely Irish names out there, if you're not familiar do check them. I'm from Dublin and live in NI and have come across some howlers as people just don't have the knowledge of the language.

MidYearDiary · 05/09/2024 17:17

I think the issue it's unfamiliar to many, and if you removed the 'h', it would be pronounced 'Ree-o-GAWN', and I think people might default to that, anyway?

Cotswoldmama · 05/09/2024 17:20

I've never heard of the name do would guess at rio-gun rhyming with Logan.

Topseyt123 · 05/09/2024 17:22

I would literally have no idea at all how it should be pronounced.

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 17:23

@MidYearDiary , how do you say Ríoghán?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/09/2024 17:23

I haven't seen it before but my first guess when seeing it in the title was ree-awn or ree-eh-awn with a very short middle syllable.

Babyboyno2 · 05/09/2024 17:32

Thanks all, don’t want anything complicated so guess I’ll just have to rethink

I think a lot of people would say Rogan, unless you're in Ireland in which case it's lovely

soundsys · 05/09/2024 17:36

Releasethebat · 05/09/2024 15:24

I think it's pronounced more like Ree-uh-gawn, but I might be wrong. Are you Irish?

I would pronounce it more like this also

cheezncrackers · 05/09/2024 17:42

Ree-on? I'd have guessed Regan, if a girl.

I always say the same thing on these threads, which is: If you live in Ireland, go ahead. If you don't, expect him/her to have a lifetime of explaining how to pronounce and spell their name and having it misspelt and mispronounced. Personally, that would drive me nuts, but each to their own.

Liv999 · 05/09/2024 17:54

I'm Irish and I would pronounce that Ree-gawn, surely Rían is Ree-an? Could be wrong though!

MidYearDiary · 05/09/2024 17:56

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 17:23

@MidYearDiary , how do you say Ríoghán?

Depending on dialect, I suppose it could be Ree-AWN or Ree-oh-GAWN? I've not actually come across it.

MidYearDiary · 05/09/2024 17:59

cheezncrackers · 05/09/2024 17:42

And I say the thing I always say on these threads, that the large numbers of us with Irish names and surnames who live outside of Ireland do just fine, simply by telling people how our names are pronounced and spelled, and people doing that. The way I did when I was introducing a film by Apichatpong Weerasethekul film at a student film thing.

MouseofCommons · 05/09/2024 18:01

I would assume Ree-gan. (And that's probably wrong).

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 05/09/2024 18:10

I'm Irish but live in the UK. Thought it was a boys name and would have gone with Ree an as in Rian with a fada over the i.

Looking at it a second time I'd pronounce it Ree-o-Gawn given where the fada's are.

I spend quite a bit of time at work being called by colleagues to coach them on how to pronounce Irish names. Dearbhaile has been a repeat offender. Even when told, people just can't remember consistently. Poor girl.

That said, I have plenty of colleagues with diverse backgrounds and do have the same issues. You just have to go out of your way to make the effort and drum it into your brain. Tedious for them though and I did not give my kids Irish names as they would spend their lives here having it mispronounced.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 05/09/2024 18:13

Haven't got a clue

stanleypops66 · 05/09/2024 18:18

In NI it should be fine. It's not overly popular but lovely.

It's pronounced Ree-awn anytime I've heard it.

Releasethebat · 05/09/2024 18:20

Out of interest OP, where did you come across this name?

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2024 18:42

@stanleypops66 , is it a girl's name?

Babyboyno2 · 05/09/2024 19:20

Was for naming a boy
