Baby due in a few weeks. Not finding out gender, most certain it’s a boy, but need a girls names just incase! We have picked Nathaniel for a boy. Already have a DS Miles.

We like Charlotte NN Lottie, I just worry it’s too popular?
I like Amelie and Isobel, DH not keen 😞. He likes Martha, but I find it boring.

Any other suggestions? We like timeless classics, nothing too out there…

We must have very similar taste - Charlotte, Amelie & Isabel were all on my list!

Also had Beatrice, Sasha, Amber, Lara & Maeve

I agree with you, not a fan of Martha. If you both love Charlotte then by all means go for it. A lovely, timeless classic and Lottie is a gorgeous nickname. I wouldn’t say that it’s too common at all.

Charlotte is lovely. Lottie - Yuck.

Hate Amelie. Isobel is nice (but not Izzy), love Martha.

ThatsNotMyDuck · 30/08/2024 16:45

It’s ok but I know so many Charlottes, mostly adult, one teenage and one Lottie.

Amelie, Isobel and Martha are equally as popular. My DS has all of those in his class thinking about it.

Harriet

BoleynMemories13 · 30/08/2024 16:48

Charlotte fits perfectly with Miles and is definitely a timeless classic. I much prefer it to your other choices, especially Matha which is quite frumpy and a bit of an M overkill with Miles.

'Too popular' has different meaning to each person. For me, I wouldn't even give popularity a second thought if it was my favourite name. Any of those names you've mentioned could potentially be repeated at school so you may as well go for the name you like the best.

Dd's middle name is Charlotte ( Dh's choice). One thing I'd never considered was the pronunciation, which sounds ridiculous.

To us it's ShaAR-LoT. I've been amazed at how it isn't pronouncrd that way by almost everyone we meet, with a pronunciation closer to the vegetable shallot or shar-luht ( without a real t sound in the end). DD was really confused why people were saying ' this was her name' as it wasn't as far as she was concerned.

They're are two distinct pronounciations of the name, I've even seen a MN thread about it. Might be important to you, might not. (Drives me nuts).

sel2223 · 30/08/2024 17:18

Charlotte is classic and timeless.
One of my good friends is Charlotte and in her 40's and I know a 2 year old Charlotte, it works equally for both

And Lottie is adorable

Where are you from?

I've never heard it with an extra syllable 'Sha-ar-' is it spelled the same?

Whilst, of course, it may sound slightly different in regional accents, most people would pronounce it like Princess Charlotte, which is just as it's spelled really

Sago1 · 30/08/2024 17:30

Annabelle, Belle for short.

LifeZ · 30/08/2024 17:40

@sel2223 sorry ShAR- LoT.
London.
Very few pepole seen to proponent the 'ar' or the t sound as an actual t. It's shut loh(t) soft t usually in London in our experience.

It’s SHAR-lut with a very clear t at the end, unless it’s a person who drops all their ts, I can’t imagine how it can be said any other way.

I’m a Charlotte, I’ve had some interesting spellings but never incorrect pronunciation. Never Lottie though, DF hated it (as do I) and so I’ve always been Charley.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/08/2024 19:48

i don’t like it on a personal level but that’s neither here nor there. However love or loathe it there’s no argument that’s it’s a good strong classic and timeless name.

Charlotte is a beautiful name

I've only met one baby Charlotte but knew many when I was at school. It's a classic.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/08/2024 21:53

Charlotte, nn Lottie is fine. Classic and quite timeless and despite its popularity she’d be unlucky to get another in her class. Alice, Emily, Anna, Harriet, Rose, Eleanor, Maria and Elizabeth would be similar in style imo - classic and still popular. Isobel is sort of the same (and I do love it) but the Isabel/ Isabelle thing could make it a pain.

If you are really worried about popularity then you could consider names like Catherine, Caroline, Sarah, Laura, Lydia, Georgina or Julia. Very classic but not as popular recently.

Or go with classic but much less commonplace - Antonia, Juliet, Claudia, Serena, Helena, Josephine, Rosalind, Louisa, Celia.
