Duncan

We are due our 2nd baby next month, first baby went 3 days without a name before we settled on a classic name. With the new baby DH keeps saying he really likes Duncan as a name. We are Scottish and I was at school with a few Duncan but don't know any under 20 now and I just can't make my mind up if it's hideous or not! If it was purely up to me I wouldn't consider Duncan but it does go well with our surname and our first child's name.
What are others opinions? I really don't want it to be a few days after baby is born and we don't have a name so I just give in due to exhaustion . This is a really important decision which I need to get right

Great name! I know Duncans who are adults and children. Timeless!

Waterboatlass · 26/08/2024 13:44

I really like Duncan myself. It sounds strong, traditional and capable to me but hideous is a strong word! What is it you don't like about it?

theduchessofspork · 26/08/2024 13:46

I really like it

Unusual but well known. Never popular enough to be dated.

I think it sounds quite guttural, it's just not a pretty name I feel. I know that sounds silly but I want a name I enjoy saying, I'm going to be saying it for the rest of my life

It's fine but I don't know any young ones. I'm not in Scotland though.
Only downside is that it makes me think Duncan Biscuit.

butteriesplease · 26/08/2024 14:52

I'm in Scotland - I like Duncan! Everyone can spell it, pronounce it, and it's nice. I think it's a strong name, without any negative connotations. Plus, my neighbour is called Duncan, and he's a nice person - !

HerewegoagainSS · 26/08/2024 14:55

Love it!! Far better than all these twee ‘ie’ names everyone is favoring.

BastardsWant2PutUpMyPremiums · 26/08/2024 15:02

Not keen.
Connor?

SnapBang · 26/08/2024 15:03

I like it. Reminds me of Macbeth for some reason. I immediately though “King Duncan” when I read it.

craigth162 · 26/08/2024 15:04

I dont know anyone under 40 called duncan but its a good strong name.

SaintHonoria · 26/08/2024 15:11

I like it.

It's traditional but uncommon in todays generation.

You are right to hesitate if you don't love it, and about that post-birth exhaustion when you can't think clearly and just give in. I chose my DD's name beforehand and I love it. DS's I got persuaded to agree to in the circs described. It's OK but was my second choice. OTOH it has to be something your DH loves as well.

eggandchip · 26/08/2024 15:31

Sorry op i dont like it duncan.

HettyCletter · 26/08/2024 15:41

I really like it. Sadly, I’ve suggested it to DH with all three of my boy pregnancies and he’s vetoed it every time.

DramaAlpaca · 26/08/2024 15:42

It's a fine, strong, underused Scottish classic. A good name, in other words.

Waterboatlass · 26/08/2024 15:47

I don't think that's silly, if you don't like the sound of it that's a good reason to keep looking!

Declan has a similar vibe (Irish though not Scottish?).

Sorenlorrenson · 26/08/2024 15:51

Love it.
Quite rare these days, but very traditional and Scottish. L

jackstini · 26/08/2024 15:56

Donuts...

I was going to be called Duncan if I was a boy - but I'm 52

Kitkat1523 · 26/08/2024 15:57

i don’t like it.
I know 2 …1 is a relative and another a former work colleague…both in their 50s

Lemongrassandcamomile · 26/08/2024 15:58

I like it. Easy to spell, classic, but not too common.

beetr00 · 26/08/2024 16:01

a memory of old, less sophisticated times 😊 but....

"Duncan" make your garden grow

JellicleCat · 26/08/2024 16:02

All the Duncan's i know are lovely so it is a yes from me. Youngest i know is in his 20s.

Beth216 · 26/08/2024 16:03

I don't like it and I wouldn't go with it if you're not sure.
