I gather Noah is rather popular, but just how popular?
has it been in the top 10 for a long time? Do you personally know many?

I don’t know any but this is my first baby and I don’t know actually know that many children!

Thanks.

shoopshoopdedoo · 24/08/2024 17:44

I know a 7yo and a baby.

theduchessofspork · 24/08/2024 17:48

I know 5 I think, one mid 20s one mid teens and the other 3 between 5 and 10.

Have a look on darkgreener for how popular it is right now

shallweorderpizza · 24/08/2024 17:48

I do know a lot, and other Old Testament names like Elijah, Ezra, Jude and so on.

Berlinlover · 24/08/2024 17:53

I live in Ireland and it’s very popular here. Personally I think names ending with an ah sound very feminine so would never use it for a boy.

LoneHydrangea · 24/08/2024 17:57

Lovely, cool name. But I’d be wary of using it as it’s so very popular.

Having said that, we know only one and he’s 25.

Clementine22 · 24/08/2024 17:58

I only know 1.

I love the name Noah, I wouldn’t worry about whether it’s popular or if other people have it.

StampOnTheGround · 24/08/2024 18:17

I don't know of any - have a 2 year old who goes to different toddler classes and nursery!

PurpleChrayn · 24/08/2024 18:21

I know loads. It's such a dreadful, dreary nothingy name. Like a puff of air.

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2024 18:45

I know several and it's one of those names I hear screeched across the park, NO-AAAAH, along with Rapha-YELL!
Shortens to No.

sel2223 · 24/08/2024 19:14

If you like it, use it OP!

It was my sisters top boy name choice 10 years ago but she ended up having my niece

ApricitySeeker · 24/08/2024 19:17

There are 3 in my son’s class at school and 2 in the other class in his year. It’s a lovely name but if you use it be prepared for him to be known as Noah LastInitial when he’s at school!

soundsys · 24/08/2024 19:37

I know a 6 year old Noah and a teenager. (I love the name!)

ReadtheReviews · 24/08/2024 19:41

Don't actually know any. Think it's lovely op.

fourelementary · 24/08/2024 19:42

I only know one who is 5

I like it- classic.

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/08/2024 21:23

I’ve got kids in 3 different schools (primary and secondary) and there are at least two Noah’s in each of their school / year groups. I also know a couple of friends with children called Noah. However, my son has a top 5 name and I have never regretted choosing it - it’s still my favourite boys name and it’s never adversely affected his life - it’s not like in the past when there were 3 children with the same name in one class, as a much broader range of names are now used. I personally love the name Noah and wouldn’t let popularity put me off using it.

Gosh I've never been able to articulate how I feel about Noah before but this is exactly it. It has no substance, and I do think it sounds both girlish and childish. I have a new baby nephew called Noah, and I absolutely hate the name, funny how something so insubstantial can illicit that reaction. I have to be thankful as it could be much worse, their older child's first name is their last name in a different language (English first name, Norman French last name).

I know so many young Noahs. Mostly very nice boys, but privately I do think it’s a very weak, wet sounding name.

It’s not remotely classic! People would have been startled to meet a Noah before the 21st century. “Classic” is the kind of name you might expect to encounter in any age group, like James, Nicholas or Ben.

Cherryana · 24/08/2024 22:56

@GreenTeaLikesMe - the name Noah comes from the Bible. It’s a story in the book of Genesis probably written about 5000 years ago. So pre-dates the 21 century by a few millennia!

Bey · 24/08/2024 23:03

I know one who is 11 and a lovely boy. I love the name and have done for years. If you love it use it. I chose a rare name for my eldest that is now really common and gets slagged off on mumsnet for being chavvy but I still love it and my eldest suits it

It was known as a name but not commonly given. I think it was sometimes given as a name by religious families in the 18th and 19th centuries, but between then and the 21st century, very rarely.

BoleynMemories13 · 25/08/2024 05:15

People can be so snobby sometimes about popular names but all that matters OP is that you love it. Who cares how many others there might be?

It's all relative. Ok, it has been in the top 10 for about 10 years now and is currently the number one name, but it only got just over 4,500 registrations in 2022. Jack was getting over 10,000 registrations per year when these sorts of records began being routinely published in 1996 and the number one name in the 80s, 70s, 60s would have been getting even more. A name with 4,500 registrations would have only just scraped the top 20 in the late 90s. 'Popular' names are nowhere near as popular as they once were.

Noah is a lovely name. Everyone is different but, imo, it's far better to choose the number one name then some of the celeb wannabe ridiculous names you hear people opting for these days in a desperate attempt to be 'cool' or 'different'. I think some people forget they're naming a human being, rather than a pet.

Don't be put off by the "he'll be one of 3 in his class" rubbish that some on here love to spout. People remember the days of 3 Sarahs in every class etc when we were at school but times have changed, with the top names receiving far less registrations each year than they use to. There are over 20,000 primary schools in England and Wales. Chances are, those 4,500 Noahs are going to be pretty well spread out! Of course it could be duplicated, but that's just random chance. It could happen to any name. With only 4,500 odd born each year currently, the chances really aren't as high as some make out.
