Thoughts on the name Hollie?

Surname is Rosewood so the full name would be Hollie Rosewood. DH thought it was nice, but some of the family thinks Holly is better. I thought Holly looks a little more dated.

Who cares what 'some of the family' think it's up to you and your DP

Sorrelia · 24/08/2024 13:04

Honestly the Holly Wood and Holly botanical + Rosewood would bother me. It sounds like a Hallmark Christmas movie character, kindly.

I usually prefer the spelling Holly, but I don't dislike Hollie and I actually think your thinking re the tree-ey surname makes sense.

Curious how you have to spell your name 3 or 4 times a week.... is it to do with your work or every day life?

I prefer Hollie to Holly but love both and think it's a fab name

I have to because I regularly give out my email address on the phone as part of my job. It's really fucking annoying!

I love Holly/Hollie. In fact that's the name of one of my children.

We chose Holly as our preferred spelling but either is nice.

I think it goes really nicely with your surname. It's got a "cool kid" vibe to me but without being to try hard.

Holly not Hollie. Holly is a type of tree. What is Hollie? Just a pair of syllables together. In any case Holly Rosewood is too foresty.

You could say that for most names though 🙄

undertheashtree · 27/08/2024 09:00

Just be aware there are so many children whose names end in that "ee" sound (Holly, Lilly, Ivy, etc). Also be aware such sounding names are very popular and in primary school your child might be known as "Holly R" all the way through primary school (and beyond). My daughter had two in her class and the initial becomes part of the name!

KirstenBlest · 27/08/2024 09:01

Anything else we need to be aware of?

timoteigirl · 27/08/2024 15:58

First thought why it is spelt with -ie......................

BastardsWant2PutUpMyPremiums · 27/08/2024 16:21

Hollie Rosewood sounds lovely. Flowers

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 27/08/2024 16:22

Holly with a Y. Love it

Prawncow · 27/08/2024 16:28

It sounds like a character in a children’s book. Too twee.

zingally · 27/08/2024 17:01

Hollie Rosewood sounds like a variety of tree species, surely?

It's a pretty name, but it doesn't go with the surname. Sorry.

alis20 · 28/01/2025 19:54

Totally disagree with this (not being rude). My little girl was born in September and we named her "Hollie". My husband preferred this spelling. I was concerned about this exact issue (so I understand your perspective). However, at every baby group or registering her for anything people always say is it with a "y" or "ie". I don't see it any differently to Mollie/Molly.

alis20 · 28/01/2025 19:56

My 4mo is called Hollie. I'm always asked with a "y" or "ie"

MajorCarolDanvers · 28/01/2025 19:56

Holly is nicer

alis20 · 28/01/2025 19:57

HowIrresponsible · 20/08/2024 09:15

She'll have a lifetime correcting people and and saying ie and not y.

Not true. My 4mo is called Hollie. People always say "with a 'y' or 'ie". Although I was concerned about this. Just to reassure any future Hollie parents! :)

GreenTeaLikesMe · 29/01/2025 04:16

I don't think you can call her "Hollie Rosewood" - it's way too botanical.

Rosewood is a nice surname that would work well with most names, but not a plant name!

Needanewname42 · 29/01/2025 21:38

@anonhawk3
Since someone else bumped it, is baby here yet ? Did you stick with Holly?

Onlyvisiting · 29/01/2025 21:41

Holly definitely.

Jessieshome · 30/01/2025 11:52

I think Hollie/Holly Rosewood is an absolutely lovely name! I love how botanical it is.

The 'ie' instead of a 'y' is so common now it's hardly a big deal or anything significant. I'd go with a 'y' myself but that's just probably my age, which would confirm your point about the 'y' spelling being dated 😀

My name has the 'ee' sound and ends in a 'y' and nowadays it occasionally gets spelled with an 'ie' or people ask and I have to correct them or let them know. I've actually started saying 'with a y' automatically a lot of the time now. It's not a big deal in the slightest.
