Thoughts on the name Hollie?

Surname is Rosewood so the full name would be Hollie Rosewood. DH thought it was nice, but some of the family thinks Holly is better. I thought Holly looks a little more dated.

I prefer Polly, which might work better with the surname.
Agree with pp that people might hear Hollie-Rose Wood.

HowIrresponsible · 20/08/2024 09:15

She'll have a lifetime correcting people and and saying ie and not y.

I'm not a fan of spelling things incorrectly to make them look modern. Spell it Holly!

This. It's particularly odd to do this when the name is an actual word too imo. I think Holly is a lovely name and goes really well with your surname. I teach quite a few girls called Holly and one called Hollie.

HowIrresponsible · 20/08/2024 09:21

One if my old uni friends did something similar. Named his daughter Lillie.

I took one look at it and thought just why. She's going to have her whole life telling people how to spell her name.

GingerPirate · 20/08/2024 09:23

Nothing special.

squishee · 20/08/2024 09:23

Your surname needs something classy but not botanical. Tamara, Paloma, Grace?

BridgetJonesBigPants · 20/08/2024 09:37

Holly. Avoid endless corrections.

I know this wasn't the question but Holly Rosewood is a bit of a funny name. Molly?

Els1e · 20/08/2024 09:38

I prefer the Holly spelling rather than Hollie, which just looks like you can't spell. But not sure about the name with your surname. I would go with something like Rebecca Rosewood, Becky for short.

SossijRoll · 20/08/2024 09:54

I think it’s fine.

Although I did meet a Holly Wood once, which I thought was an odd choice.

Holly Rosewood is the spelling I would use.

Other names that you might like with Rosewood.
Rebecca
Hermione
Polly
Ellen
Sally
Alice

Curious how you have to spell your name 3 or 4 times a week.... is it to do with your work or every day life?

I prefer Hollie to Holly but love both and think it's a fab name

Yesterday I had to spell it to the vet when booking an appointment and on the phone telling someone my work email address.

You have given me the idea to get the other spelling of my name set up to auto forward to my email address so thank you.

Scissorsisters · 20/08/2024 10:53

I think it will be misheard as Holly-Rose Wood. Choose a name that isn't commonly hyphenated with Rose.

KirstenBlest · 20/08/2024 12:33

Rose seems to be the middle name of every other girl so there's probably not many names to choose from. Smile

BoleynMemories13 · 20/08/2024 12:40

I agree with the majority that Holly is a much nicer spelling (ultimately, traditional is always going to age better than creative). I also agree though that, sadly, it sounds very silly with your surname.

unsync · 20/08/2024 12:58

Use the traditional form or she will spend her life having to correct people. Is baby due around Christmas as that used to be the reason for the name? See also Ivy and Noelle. Coupled with the surname though, it does sound rather like a shrub, irrespective of how you spell it. Also, makes me think of Hollie Hobbie.

Peonies12 · 20/08/2024 12:59

I'd spell it Holly, give the kid a break. It does sound a little odd with that surname, like a name of a plant.

Did they have Scottish links Lillie is a Scottish surname, so I can see why it could be used. Lillie can be used as a short form of Lillian.

So not quite as odd as Holly and Hollie.

KirstenBlest · 20/08/2024 19:26

Lillie and Hollie are both valid spellings but not the most often used. Neither go with the surname. Lily-Rose is probably used enough to have a Lillie Rosewood having to say that it's not Lily-Rose Wood.

lilyoflaguna · 20/08/2024 20:03

the "-ie" ending might be nice for children, it is a cute and twee sort of name....but for when they are older, standard Holly would serve a lot better . it is a nice and classic timeless name, i am very fond of it...

Edenmum2 · 20/08/2024 21:36

Posters above are right - you may like it but you are literally making sure your daughter has to say 'Hollie with an ie' every time she introduces herself. It will be a giant pain in the arse for her.

Hannahspeltbackwards · 21/08/2024 11:34

I know more Hollies than Hollys (ranging from 30's down to pre school).

Hoppinggreen · 21/08/2024 11:35

I am not keen, its too cutesy for me and I dislike the ie spelling even more than the y

VenusClapTrap · 21/08/2024 12:28

Replacing a y with an ie actually feels more dated to me. Everyone was doing it in the nineties and noughties - Lillie, Hollie, Sallie, Mollie, Lucie, etc etc. I think the pendulum has swung back to spelling them correctly now. Possibly because those kids have now grown up and the ie spelling makes those names seem twee.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/08/2024 13:57

Holly is nice and I also prefer the Hollie spelling but I dont think it works with your surname. You need to avoid a flower name.

Firebird83 · 21/08/2024 14:21

Too similar to Hollywood
