Olga - old witchy vibes. Prefer Orla.

Luna - my favourite as it’s very pretty, but also has Luna Lovegood / loony associations for me. Prefer Lena.

Mina - meaner. Prefer Mila.

Gaia - I can just imagine kids saying “gayer” in banter - especially if a supply teacher reads the register and mispronounces it! Prefer Kaia.

Juno - sounds like “do y’ know” or a football chant. Prefer June / Junie.

BetteLaSwet · 09/08/2024 22:55

Olga - old Russian lady
Juno - new to me, haven’t heard it before but sounds like an anime name
Gaia - reminds me of poor Gaia Pope
Luna - obvs Spanish for moon but as others have said, it’s everywhere

I like Mina. I liked Jasmine for a girl, with nn Mina.

@BetteLaSwet Juno (mythology) - Wikipedia

Juno

MirandaBlu · 10/08/2024 00:56

Olga - I like that it's classic and familiar and works in multiple languages, but it SOUNDS harsh - there's a reason the softer "Olya" (Olia, Olja) is often used as a diminutive for Olga in countries where it's common
Luna - I like it but yes, the dogs always come up! Plus the literary reference (see also: Lyra)
Mina - like, but it feels like it's supposed to be short for something? No reason for that, just my mental process. Also not sure if MEE-na, MY-na, or MIH-na. I like Minna better, but that's not 4 letters.
Gaia - like a lot (but possibly the "gay" reference, and potential mispronunciation, is worth considering?)
Juno - do not like (the mythological Juno was a terrible role model, and the recent pop culture Junos aren't great either). I do like June better.

I'd probably choose Luna or Gaia.

Are you open to other four letter girls' names? Some of my faves are:
Cara
Esme (maybe more popular than you want, esp if you're in Scotland)
Hope
Ione
Iris
Lumi (Finnish name meaning "snow)
Romy (I know, Boris Johnson!)
Sage
Sela
Zoia/Zoya

Love Luna and Juno and they'd both be on my list.

Not really keen on the others.

mathanxiety · 10/08/2024 02:33

Juno
Olga

None of the rest.

Houselamp · 10/08/2024 06:05

Olga - the bit Olga Coch said "Olga is old Slavic for 'I wish you were a boy' "
Luna- dogs and harry potter
Mina- not much, maybe the elephant girl from the Sing films. its fine
Gaia- little hippyish but in a nice way
Juno- not much, slightly the film. It's nice.

I like Juno and Gaia the most

ImikSiMik · 10/08/2024 06:15

Neither of those I'm afraid, here's a few 4 letter girls names I've come across recently:

NIna
Tara
Iona
Anna
Rina
Tina
Lana
Lena
Gina
Zara
Zena

yikesanotherbooboo · 10/08/2024 06:22

Of those names my favourite is Olga. It has substance.
Luna and Mina are dogs names in my mind.
Gaia is hippyish and lime the previous two I'm not keen on the sound.
Juno is a bit old fashioned now but would be my second favourite.

Greategret · 10/08/2024 06:53

I can only say make sure the name is easy to spell. I have a 4-letter first name and I have spent a lifetime spelling it out. It was an old-fashioned name when I got it and it's not got more popular.

fortheveryfirsttime · 10/08/2024 10:12

Sorry I never answered the bit about what it makes you think of.

Mina-I know an adult Mina and she's lovely so I think of her. She likes her name but people constantly call her Nina.

Olga-sturdy Russian gymnast. This is the one I really dislike.

Gaia- hippy, lives in Glastonbury town, sells hair wraps and patchouli. Also sadly that girl who went missing and died down in Dorset.

Luna- possibly a bit similar to Gaia but it makes me smile. It's such a pretty name. Bit of a dreamer but maybe that's because of the HP character.

Juno-Immediately the film but in a really positive way. She was such a great character, smart and funny.

Anotheranonymousname · 10/08/2024 10:18

Mina is a name I never know how to pronounce having come across the my-nah and mee-nah pronunciations.
Luna I used to like but I know lots of pets from goldfish to dogs with the name so think of it as a pets' name these days.
Gaia is another pronunciation one.
Olga, first thought is Olga the polga.
Juno is my favourite of your list.

M4driver · 10/08/2024 11:03

Olga - bit heavy/clunky sounding. I'd think you have Russian/Belarussian/German heritage.
Luna - the moon. Makes me think of Lunatic.
Mina - not encountered this one and wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Meena (like "meaner")? or Myna (like "minor/miner"). Neither pronunciations have particularly positive connotations.
Gaia - I know it's a theory to do with the cosmos and I would pronounce it as Gay-a, but perhaps it's Guy-a? The spelling and pronunciation difficulties might get a bit tedious. I imagine it would be shortened to Gay which you might not want.
Juno - this one is a bit more fashionable. I know it's a girl's name but I'd worry that some people would think it's a boy's. Comes from mythology.

If I had to choose one of them I'd go for Juno.

Do you like Orla, Thea, Erin, Maya, Emma, Judy or Lois?

theduchessofspork · 10/08/2024 11:16

InvalidCrumb · 09/08/2024 20:37

Juno is the only one I like.

Gaia is a bit hippy/ sci-fi movie.
Mina is a bit nothingy.
Luna sounds like loony/ lunatic
Olga is at least a bit different - it could grow on me!

Sorry!

Agree

Other than Olga couldn’t grow on me -

Oona
Lois
Inez
Clio
Emma
Dora
Hera
Lara
Vita

might be others

KoalaDrama · 10/08/2024 11:20

I voted Juno because it’s my favourite but also because I work in a school and you wouldn’t believe how many of the girls’ names start with or end in an A and they all merge into one.

Marcipex · 10/08/2024 11:23

Mina - meaner
Juno - hefty head girl
Luna - loony
Gaia -gayer?
Olga -angry Russian woman

Gayer? Are you 8.

redrudolph · 10/08/2024 13:59

How about Leni?

ginasevern · 10/08/2024 15:25

I'm bucking the trend and going to say Mina. The rest are a little overused at the moment but Mina isn't. It's short and pretty too.

RuthW · 10/08/2024 17:34

Luna is the only one I would consider.

RuthW · 10/08/2024 17:37

I think of:

Olga - a foreign middle aged lady
Luna - a young child, what a nice name
Mina- a vagina/vulva
Gaia - poor person with a name 50% will get wrong
Juno - a female with a masculine sounding name

QueenOfTheNihilist · 10/08/2024 18:21

Olga: Guinea pig or some sort of E European camp commandant

Luna: Nice but quite pet like / hippyish.

Mina: I like this, but sounds like a nickname

Gaia: tricky to spell, sounds like a car model.

WAIT what’s with the vulva reference?

I love Olga. Think it's unusual and beautiful.
