Liza/ Lisa and good ol Liz are my favourites. It’s so personal, I cannot bear Libby, because of the noise it makes, much too flappy of lip and also much too cutesy. Betsy is great.

Strong and not frilly.

For all you pedants, or pendants, as the case may be, a diminutive can also be a nickname. All diminutives are nicknames, but not all nicknames are diminutives.

My vote is for Libby.

Get used to the idea that whatever you call her, you won't have control over what she becomes known as - either through her choice or her friends'. That said I love almost all the Elizabeth associated names.

My friend's Mum used to get really upset when friends and family called my friend Lizzie or Betsy because they weren't names she'd given her but as pretty as Elizabeth is, it's a gob full and bound to be shortened.

This isn't necessarily true. I have an Elizabeth who has always been Lizzie- most of her friends have no idea her name is Elizabeth. Schools now don't insist on using the names on the birth certificate so you can choose what shortening to be known by.
