Lizzie or Libby.

I've also known Liz, Beth, Buffy.

gingercat02 · 02/08/2024 11:51

I like Lib or Libby. My Aunt was a Betty and a friend is Lizzie.

dutysuite · 02/08/2024 11:54

I love Lizzie and I think it suits a teen. My DD middle name is Elizabeth and I call her Lizzie sometimes. I also like Eliza.

Buff and Buffy
Lizzy

I'm an Elizabeth and I'm known as Lizzie. To me Lizzie sounds friendly (I can't bear Liz for some reason). Though lots of people have told me that Lizzie "sounds silly" and refused to use it!

My mum and sister have called me Lizbeth and Elspeth and I had a boyfriend who insisted on Beth which was a bit weird and didn't seem like my name at all.

My daughter has Elizabeth May as middle names and one of her nicknames is Betty May, my husband started it, not sure why.

I like the full name but being called it makes me feel like I'm being told off at school or attending a medical appointment!

Lizzie or Betty

Betty or Lizzie

With a name like Elizabeth the parents don't really get to choose. My sister is Elizabeth and always introduces herself as Elizabeth and yet literally within seconds people she has never met before are calling her Liz as though they simply did not hear what she said. She finds it intensely irritating (although she realises most people are simply trying to be friendly). Just resign yourself to the fact that you can call her what you like at home but you can't control what she is called by others.
My own DD has a name that doesn't have an obvious shortened form but her school friends managed to come up with one and that is what a lot of people now call her. I absolutely hate it but I just have to grit my teeth and smile.
I really don't get this current obsession with parents choosing a "nickname" (by which people usually seem to mean a diminutive or shortened form). Nicknames develop naturally - they can't be imposed by parents outside the home.

Libby

Probably Libby or Beth. Elsie is sweet. Lizzie is ok, but perhaps feels a bit dated now. I know Lily is apparently a shortening of Elizabeth, but personally I see this as a completely different name.

I love Eliza but also see this as a totally different name, due to the stress on the "eye" sound which is different to how it's said in Elizabeth (a short "ih" sound). I understand the similar origins but I wouldn't naturally shorten Elizabeth to Eliza.

I agree with all of this.

Beth, Eliza, Bess or possibly Libby are all lovely.

Ahem, pedant alert, it's actually a diminutive, not a nickname, as it comes from shortening the actual name. A nickname could be anything, like, I don't know, 'Freckles', or 'Bunny'.

Gowlbag · 02/08/2024 14:06

My Elizabeth is a Libby but I prefer Birdie. If I’d known it was an acceptable nickname for Elizabeth I’d have called her that. Although she has told me she’d have hated it 🤣

GoldenLegend · 02/08/2024 15:07

Libby

Meadowwild · 02/08/2024 15:10

Elizabeth is a beautiful name. I like Eliza, Beth, Ella, Elsie, Elle, Liza, Bibi.

It's the most versatile name.

Flidina · 02/08/2024 18:41

I like the late Queens nickname, Lilibet.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/08/2024 19:09

Since I read the Chalet School books many moons ago I have liked Elisaveta as a name.

Pintu · 02/08/2024 20:15

Ellie, Eliza, Beth

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/08/2024 22:02

Cute and modern Bizzy (instead of more commonplace Lizzie) or old fashioned Bess (as in Elizabeth I “Good Queen Bess” ) .I also think trendy Effie sounds quite cool (like the character in TV’s Skins).

Sorry I couldn’t decide on just one - Elizabeth is such a fab name, partly because of all the nickname options but also as it’s the ultimate timeless classic with some amazing historical namesakes.

verabarbleen · 03/08/2024 08:58

My little one is Elizabeth my plan was her nickname to be Beth or Betty but she is now 3 and everyone calls her Lizzie , that's her favourite 🤩

StoatofDisarray · 03/08/2024 09:01

Queenie.

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 03/08/2024 17:46

Libby, Betsy or Betty

BetteLaSwet · 03/08/2024 21:56

I like Lizzie.

I knew a French Elisabeth who was known as Babette, just to throw that out there.

LyricalGangsta · 03/08/2024 21:58

Lillibet I got called

BeeandG · 03/08/2024 22:18
