I suggested Imogen for a girl the other day and DP said with a smile "we could call her Midge for short" - and I genuinely love it!

Not sure if just mad baby brain though...?!

Just call her Imogen.

The MN obsession with "nicknames" continues

So weird eh! Never has the nickname conversation with a single person in real life.

My kids get called all sorts of stupid shit on a daily basis 😆

lastgreat · 26/07/2024 20:44

I knew an Imogen who went by Ginny

Thisismyusername1 · 26/07/2024 20:45

We have an Imogen in the family and call her Imps although her friends mostly call her Immy or Imogen so Imps is more of a family nickname

newleafontheplantjohn · 26/07/2024 20:47

Midge is a great nickname for Imogen.

Isn't Mrs Maizel called Midge? I can see it having a resurge because of that.

She is; is it short for Imogen?

Just call her Imogen.

The MN obsession with "nicknames" continues

That and the obsession that a name needs a longer version so that he or she has 'more options', usually meaning that a Lily needs to be a Liliana even though she will only ever be called Lily.

nc14 · 26/07/2024 20:50

@newleafontheplantjohn She’s Miriam Maisel.

Meadowwild · 26/07/2024 20:52

I know a Mogs. Don't like it, personally, but she seems to.

RobertSalamander · 26/07/2024 20:54

Midge like the fly?

I know an Imo and a Ginnie as well as the ubiquitous Immy.

HaroldMeaker · 26/07/2024 20:55

Midge is cute ! My friend's Dd is Immy, also lovely.

Anonymousbosch39 · 26/07/2024 20:55

I had a friend called Imogen at school. We all called her 'Mo' and she didn't seem to mind.

RaraRachael · 26/07/2024 20:55

Hope you don't live on the west coast of Scotland - nobody would thank you for being called midge there 😋

HappyMouse · 26/07/2024 20:57

Immy is cute

sarahsarahsarahsar · 26/07/2024 21:00

Strangely I love "Mog" - now I see it in the name I can't unsee it.

SkaneTos · 26/07/2024 21:01

I think Midge is a lovely name, and I think it's a cute nickname for Imogen!

The name Midge makes me think of Midge, the Barbie doll. In her case, Midge is a nickname for Margaret.

I don't think about a fly at all, but English is not my first language, so that might be why.

merryhouse · 26/07/2024 21:38

One of my sister's classmates (born 1972) was called Midge. IIRC her actual name was Rachel Grin

Overtheatlantic · 26/07/2024 21:42

Can’t you just call her Imogen? Why do all names have to be shortened?

otravezempezamos · 26/07/2024 21:44

Imogen is great, Midge is hilarious. can’t stand Immy.

RaraRachael · 26/07/2024 21:45

It's compulsory on MN - And most of the time it isn't a nickname, it's a shortened form.

blink3times · 26/07/2024 21:53

I call our Imogen, Iggy or sometimes Jim. Her friends mostly Immy. Never heard of Midge.

blondieminx · 26/07/2024 21:53

Why would you shorten your daughter’s name to a name for an insect ?

Immy is cute for toddlers, less so as they get older I think.

JimNast · 26/07/2024 21:59

Or it's so contrived that the 'nn' has to be explained

TheSecondMrsTanqueray · 27/07/2024 04:47

Why do women need a cutesy nickname for their offspring? I have a 3 syllable first name and no one has ever felt the need to shorten it.

MirandaBlu · 27/07/2024 05:21

The one I know is Imo for short but would introduce herself as Imogen, mostly, at least as an adult. And she was also called Momo as a child/among family due to a slightly older sibling not being able to say Imogen/Imo. Surprised no one has suggested Moggie!
