Rune...? Too weird? Scandi heritage.

Hi!
Our son is due rather soon - we're considering the name Rune.
It's an Old Norse name - we're somewhat Danish.
Our other child has a common Danish name.
Is Rune too weird?
Please be ruthless!
I worry he'll be bullied? Or people will think he's from a weird hippie family?

Any Scandi people out there with any opinions on this, also?

Other options at the moment are
Keld
Esben
Bjorn

Thankyou!

I know a Rune but he's from Denmark so it's very normal. It's a nice name

JuvenileBigfoot · 21/07/2024 17:37

Rune sounds fine to me, if a bit unusual.

Love Esben though and am adding it to my list if you don't mind.

Beginningless · 21/07/2024 17:37

I’ve never heard it but I like it, it’s unusual but not weird, I think.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/07/2024 17:38

I quite like it! Would you pronounce the 'e' on the end (I'm guessing it would be pronounced in Danish)? Or would it be 'roon' like the English word 'rune'?

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 21/07/2024 17:39

I like it, although it makes me think of Holger Rune, the Danish tennis player.

BellesAndGraces · 21/07/2024 17:40

Makes me think of ruin. Personally not a fan but if it’s common in your culture I think you should go for it.

Namechanger385u4p · 21/07/2024 21:47

The Rune i know does make an "e" sound but sees the Rune - ryhmes - with - moon version as anglacised as he thinks britiah people always get the e sound wrong lol

foolssilver · 21/07/2024 21:52

We have the female version for DD and love it. Other DC have scandi names too. Always get really positive comments. Go for it!

CruCru · 22/07/2024 00:24

I like it BUT how would you pronounce it? If people pronounce it the other way, will it annoy you? The Pap should said that British people get the “e” sound wrong makes me think it might get annoying for the child.

Makes me think of the ghost story, Casting the Runes, by M.R. James, a well-known ghost story author. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casting_the_Runes

YouLookLikeStevieNicks · 22/07/2024 01:10

It makes me think of a character from Gilmore Girls and it's not a positive association, sorry!

crowgift · 22/07/2024 01:24

I worked with a Rune (also Danish) and he was very nice. I assumed it was quite a common scandi name. I also like Esben.

MsAmerica · 22/07/2024 01:30

People will hear "Rune" as "Ruin."

Consider a conventional first name and leave the exotic one for the middle name.

OliviaFlaversham · 22/07/2024 01:34

Also intrigued how it is pn.

I like Rune and if said to rhyme with moon, can’t see how it would be confused with Ruin (although I’m terrible at trying accents so maybe there are some which mean they’re similar). Esben is nice too.

Normallynumb · 22/07/2024 03:30

I really like it

Mendingfences · 22/07/2024 19:32

I would not go for Rune pronounced "roon" - that doesnt feel anglesised to me, it just feels like "we saw the name written down and guessed" although I expect thats a very personal thing. How do you feel about Runar?

uhOhOP · 22/07/2024 19:39

MsAmerica · 22/07/2024 01:30

People will hear "Rune" as "Ruin."

Consider a conventional first name and leave the exotic one for the middle name.

A Danish name for a (okay, "somewhat") Danish kid is not "exotic". "Exotic" comes across as a kind of xenophobic insult in this context, I think.

Hardlyworking · 22/07/2024 19:49

Go for it. My nephew is Rune (he was born there to his English parents)

They've lived back here since he was 2 and everyone seems to love the name. No bullying at all and he's now 11.

They pronounce it the proper way 'roo-na', but without the scandi rolled r sound.

Only issues he's had is explaining the pronunciation to new teachers and such who commonly pronounce it roon or roon-ee until corrected.

pjani · 22/07/2024 19:52

I like it! I’d guess you were a hippy not Scandinavian (my ignorance) and still like it.

Anotheranonymousname · 22/07/2024 20:16

I know a Rune (pr. roo-nuh) who has a Swedish background. I don't think it's a weird or hippy name and have taught children with much more tease-provoking names that didn't get teased for them.

Rainbowsponge · 22/07/2024 20:18

What does ‘somewhat danish’ mean?

Tharshe · 22/07/2024 20:24

I think it's quite nice - and I really, REALLY dislike yooneeek names. It sounds simple, Scandi and sweet. My DH is Swedish and we have given a Swedish middle name to our son and a very easy to spell, traditional English first name. This is because our Swedish surname is largely unpronounceable to an English ear! I also love Bjorn - but you know he'll be called Byawn and not Byurn - so will that grate?

MumChp · 22/07/2024 20:29

6162 males are called Rune ind Denmark. So pretty common.

Beth216 · 22/07/2024 20:35

I like Rune, Esben is nice too but I prefer Ebben personally - but may not be Scandi.

SpareHeirOverThere · 22/07/2024 20:50

Really nice name. Go for it.
