Hi!
Our son is due rather soon - we're considering the name Rune.
It's an Old Norse name - we're somewhat Danish.
Our other child has a common Danish name.
Is Rune too weird?
Please be ruthless!
I worry he'll be bullied? Or people will think he's from a weird hippie family?

Any Scandi people out there with any opinions on this, also?

Other options at the moment are
Keld
Esben
Bjorn

Thankyou!

I love it but cards on the table I'm a weird hippie.

I like it! If you’re in the UK it will be pronounced ‘roon’ but he’ll hopefully only have to correct people once! Both sounds are lovely I think, but the Danish pronunciation is beautiful and not difficult for an English speaker at all!

I love Keld. Was on my shortlist for DDog.

Sounds a bit cringe and try-hard to me 😳

This is my least favourite baby-name-suggestion response 😳

What's cringe or try-hard about giving your kid a name that reflects your cultural heritage, amongst other criteria? Is it that you haven't heard it before?

Dettolallin · 23/07/2024 08:16

I know of a preschool age one, fully British, pronounced to rhyme with moon. Comes across as trying too hard to be "different" to me. It's frequently misheard, has to be spelled out and frankly sounds awful in a broad Yorkshire accent!

TooMuchRedMaybe · 23/07/2024 08:46

I think it will be a bit of a pain to have to always correct people on how to pronounce it. I would avoid any Scandi name that ends with an E as it's just not pronounced the same in English. I'm Swedish and Rune a fairly common name her for men who are 70+ and it's possibly making a bit of a comeback as a lot of the names from that generation are.

If you want short Scandi names I think something like Emil, Viggo or Vidar would work better. There isn't much room for mispronunciation.

SkaneTos · 23/07/2024 17:14

Rune is a great name! (I'm Swedish).
I know a very nice man named Rune, he is 75.

usersuserse · 23/07/2024 17:22

makes me think of Prune but maybe I don't pronounce it correctly.

JC03745 · 23/07/2024 17:58

I read it as Rude initially and then thought it was a misspelling of Ruin.

I've never heard it, so was pronouncing it in my head as Roon. When someone mentioned a Danish pronunciation, I then thought it must be Rooney. It never occurred to me it would be Roon-a!

As someone with an uncommon, but not unusual, 4 letter name- he will have to spell it out all the time!

SunshineAndFizz · 23/07/2024 18:02

I know a Rune, and he gets Ru as a nickname a lot.

Wickerchaize · 23/07/2024 18:03

Rune is cool

VenusClapTrap · 28/07/2024 12:14

I love it.

People will hear "Rune" as "Ruin."

Consider a conventional first name and leave the exotic one for the middle name.

Conventional? It’s conventional in Denmark!
just because it’s not a run of the mill English name doesn’t mean it’s weird or unpronounceable

Summerperfume · 28/07/2024 19:25

Ps I love it!
go for it. It’s not weird or unusual but on MN you’ll get pearl clutching as it’s not John or George.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 28/07/2024 19:29

I like it! If I knew he had Scandi heritage I would expect it to be pronounced roon-a.

Any opinions on the name Fjord?
Too silly?
Rune or Fjord?
Or neither? Are they too out there?

I am Norwegian. Rune for me is a really old fashioned name. If I saw the name Rune now, I would think a man 50 +
Rune for me is like a Scandinavian Gary. Just very dated and not cool at all.

For me, "Fjord" is a word more than a name. It mostly refers to the specific deep sea inlets that are common in Norway (you probably already know this).
I don't know anyone, or know about anyone, who has Fjord as a first name. But I'm Swedish, not Norwegian.
But if you want something different, sure! It has a beautiful meaning.

But like I wrote earlier, Rune is a lovely name!

Enko · 30/07/2024 18:45

Issue with Rune us the pronunciation. Very different in the 2 languages. Same with Bjorn said utterly different in English to Danish.

If you don't mind rune as the English would say then go ahead. Personally I would not use Fjord. I am fond of Kjeld though as all the Kjelds I've k own have been amazing people.
