Genevieve nickname?

Thoughts on nicknames for Genevieve?

Don't love Gen/Genny shortening but know may happen automatically, which alternatives do you guys think is better though?

Evie - feels a bit too common, although tbf I've never met an Evie and I teach primary so feel it may be localised!

Genie - cute, but she'll outgrow it

Also, any other name suggestions that have similar vibes and a pretty shortening welcome?

@notatinydancer you're absolutely right, I'm looking for a diminuative

My dc has several nn, depending on where is is.

eg Samuel
Samuel - by family
Sammy Bb - school - several Samuel’s at school
sammy - - football club
Sam - scouts

I have a Genevieve but she's been "Vivi" since she was born.

Lovely 🥰 May I ask when, if ever, she uses her full name? I do wonder if it's worth having such a beautiful long name if she never uses it!

Neve or Vivi

bridgetreilly · 21/07/2024 20:47

Genie Bouchard seems to manage as an adult just fine.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 21/07/2024 20:50

I really like Vivi or Viva as a NN.

Heavenlyhoumous · 21/07/2024 20:53

Love it. The one I know is Viva.

ParkerVille · 21/07/2024 21:03

Vivi, Vieve or Genna

RogueFemale · 22/07/2024 01:12

You can't really control / enforce nicknames. They happen naturally.

Those are common nicknames for Charlotte and Matilda, just as Gen (or Genny) are for Genevieve. Arlot and Atil are not common nicknames, but you could probably force them if you wanted to, and you can probably force Vivi or Evie, if she doesn't mind explaining that her name is not Vivienne or Eva.

I agree with this post completely.

Gen is the most natural. I know one Genevieve and she goes by her full name always.

honestyISkind · 22/07/2024 03:48

The only Genevieve I know is called Gen by absolutely everyone. You can't force nicknames, it's almost certainly going to be Gen.

LoudSnoringDog · 22/07/2024 05:38

Givi.

Remaker · 22/07/2024 05:50

I know a teenage Genevieve. Parents were adamant she’d never be a Gen. Friends decided otherwise. Ditto Elizabeth and Alexandra who were only ever going to be called by their full names and now go by Libby and Alex.

If you want something like Vivi you’re going to have to call her that pretty much exclusively. And even then it might not stick. One of my DC was known by his nn everywhere but recently has acquired a different nn that is something to do with a footballer!

RoseMarigoldViolet · 22/07/2024 06:12

How are you planning on pronouncing Genevieve - the French way or anglicised way? It is such a different name depending on how you pronounce it.

Meadowwild · 22/07/2024 06:15

I love Vivi as a nn - it sounds full of life.
Genie is nice too - sounding like Jeannie.
Genna is okay.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/07/2024 06:24

For all those suggesting Vivi, which is lovely, perhaps consider Vivienne.

In my experience parents do not have the final say vis a vis nick names. We wanted DS to be known as Ned. DH and I are the only ones who use it. His friends, in Y1, decided something else and it stuck.

DD has a friend known universally as Plum. Her name is Mirabel. 😉

flutterby1 · 22/07/2024 06:42

You just won't control others going for the obvious / easiest Gen/ genny

Anything else is too contrived

Why would she consider Vivienne when she likes Genevieve.

Why would she consider Vivienne when she likes Genevieve.

Because it's also French in origin and lends itself to the nn Vivi as or more readily. Apologies if that was not obvious.

hopsalong · 22/07/2024 08:00

I love the name Genevieve but scratched it from my list (not needed in the end because I only had boys!) because I really don't like Jen, which might be spelled Gen (perhaps worse, actually, like 'gene' with a letter off) but is still plain old Jen.

An adult Genevieve convinced me that this was the only name anyone was willing to call her. But she had been Jen as a 70s child, surrounded by lots of Jennifers, and so perhaps had got used to it. (She still claimed to hate it.)

Conversely, I don't like Gwendoline at all but think Gwen is a pretty good short form name.

As are the monosyllabic and proud Joan
and Jane!

Sorry if this is not very helpful...

RuthW · 22/07/2024 15:36

Geegee is the one I know

Scumtastic · 22/07/2024 15:49

I had a pre chosen nickname for one of my girls and now she is an adult I'm almost the only person who calls her it 😅. I don't mind though and she doesn't mind either.
Her siblings call her another nickname and my husband (her Dad) and my Mum call her by her full name. My MIL calls her a foreign version of her name and her friends call her yet another nickname.

It's never caused any issues.

ChippyChips1 · 22/07/2024 16:44

@sunshineonmygrill apologies I missed this yesterday! She's about to start school and wants to be called Vivi at school 😊
Genevieve usually only comes out when she's being a pain 😅

AstonMartha · 22/07/2024 16:52

The Genevieve that I know goes by Ve as an adult with a professional career. She said that as a child family called her Gwen which she hated!
