Thoughts on Rowan

Love the name Rowan for baby boy and how it’s pronounced, although is it Irish or very English.
I know google says Irish roots etc but does anyone know a rowan that is Irish or any similar names?

also liking Ronan, Ruadhán

Ruadhán would be the Irish language version of Rowan, meaning little red-head. I’d see Ruadhán as a boys name, but Rowan quite common for either boy or girl.

I love Ruaidhrí, or Rían.

That doesn't seem to be a very reliable site @Moier. Lots of them aren't. There isn't a fada in sight for a start and that's never a good sign. I'd double-check anything picked from there.

Moreteaandchocolate · 18/07/2024 08:53

I really like Rowan! I don’t associate it with being Irish that much as it’s used so widely.

TwirlBar · 18/07/2024 09:21

Not sure the name Rowan is Irish at all?

Wikipedia says it's possibly North Germanic or Scandinavian but then Wikipedia isn't a terribly reliable source.

As pp said it sounds quite close to the Irish Ruadhán (pronounced Roo-awn) so maybe there's been some crossover (mix-up?) there.

The Irish for a rowan tree is caorthann.

Nap1983 · 18/07/2024 09:24

pretty sure its not Irish. But its a lovely name, i really like it! For either boy or girl.

Barleysugar86 · 18/07/2024 09:30

I have only known a girl Rowan- is it usually for boys?

JellyComb · 18/07/2024 09:45

It was on the list for my son. And in fact my cousin then used it for her son. Its a gorgeous name, can be used for both males and females. And not very well used but not wacky either.

FayCarew · 18/07/2024 10:15

@Moier , that site looks like a dodgy one. Rayan is Arabic not Irish, and that's just one name.

GreenMarigold · 18/07/2024 10:17

Rowan is one of my favourite names for boys. I wouldn’t have said it was Irish though.

Awrite · 18/07/2024 10:17

I've known two Rowans. Both female (now in their 40's).

I like it.

Boys usually, but can be used for a girl. I think of it as a nature name.

Boutonnière · 18/07/2024 10:19

I know 5 yr old Rowan, boy - no Irish connections. Seems a nice name 🙂

MrsBrightsidde · 18/07/2024 10:19

I’ve been a couple of baby Rowan’s over the past couple of years with English parents.

Sunshineafterthehail · 18/07/2024 10:20

I have a ds Roan.
Db Fynn.

I love Rowan!

Ruadhán pronunciation varies a bit with Irish dialect. It's Roo-awn where I live. Like this -

https://forvo.com/word/ruadh%C3%A1n/

I think it's probably more like Roo-an in the North of Ireland though? I know án is pronounced differently there. (You'd need to double-check that as I'm from the south so don't really know Ulster Irish.)

Roo-an reminds me of ruin so I think I prefer Roo-awn 🤔

Ruadhán = roo AWn

Ruan = Rooin (in the middle between ruin and rune, slight emphasis on i sound)

Normallynumb · 18/07/2024 11:36

DS2 is Rowan.. He's 26 now and has never met another as it was unusual then
Ruan is a Cornish( I believe) Variant
It means little red one and coincidentally he was strawberry blond as a baby
I also liked Aidan at the time
DS1 also has a Celtic name which then became very popular
We have no Irish heritage.

FayCarew · 18/07/2024 13:56

Ruan was a saint with a church in Cornwall. Cornish isn't closely connected to Irish and Scottish. Ruan isn't Cornish for Rowan.

Marcipex · 18/07/2024 14:03

I only know girls named Rowan.
I thought I knew a boy called Rowan but it turned out to be spelt Rohan.

PurpleChrayn · 18/07/2024 14:10

Too popular. It's the middle class slightly-hippy name du jour.

Nbaby · 18/07/2024 14:20

Thanks everyone maybe Ronan instead ?
