Full name for Finn?

This one is making a late charge for potential favourite for our son due next month, however we can’t decide on the long form of the name for his birth certificate. I’m not sure I love Finl(a/e)y as much as just Finn, what could our other options be please?

Joe Biden's daughter is Finnegan Biden I think. It's more of a boys' name than a girls' name though IMO.

If you're going to use surnames as first names Finnegan isn't as bad as some others (Harrison, Jenson, Jackson, Mackenzie etc)

It’s as bad as all other surnames as first names imo…why would it not be.

I always post about this on here but I find it particularly annoying when people with no Irish heritage use Irish surnames as first names, often without even realising that’s what they are doing (mostly because they have taken it from an American name website. In America, of course, the people mostly do have an Irish connection, or think they do…Biden being a case in point).

Finnegan is Biden's granddaughter.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2024 16:38

Just use Finn. It's a perfectly normal name in its own right and doesn't need a longer version. Ask my dog Wink

Finbar is the only one I can think of.

Growing up I lived near a school called St Finbar's

KirstenBlest · 11/07/2024 16:49

@harrietm87 , I think that names from other cultures tend to be already dated in that culture when they get used elsewhere.
Kelly was popular in my age group, which is probably an example of an Irish surname that was used as a first name.

When I hear of someone called Finn I assume it’s short for Finlay, a lovely Scottish name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/07/2024 17:03

I like Finn or Finley / Finlay

Christ0nABike · 11/07/2024 17:04

I like Finn (on its own)

Knew a French woman who had lots of children and her last was called "Fin".

Haha I love this! Please say it’s true!

@Asyouwere09 , isn't that just a bad spelling of Phineas?

Yep. Popularised by Finneas Eilish. Not a ‘real’ Irish name at all

HyggeTyggeDotCom · 11/07/2024 17:07

Thanks all. Although yes my family are Irish, I think you’ve persuaded me that just Finn is fine in its own 😊

I have a Finan but we usually just call him Finn. I also have a Rafferty - just loling at the comments above re surnames as first names :)

Greatmate · 11/07/2024 17:13

Griffin

PerfectTravelTote · 11/07/2024 17:17

Finnán is another Irish boys name, pronounced Fin-awn.

RipleyGreen · 11/07/2024 15:43

Finbar if there’s any Irish sloshing about in your mix, but Finn is a name in itself in Ireland. I think it’s originally Norse: Finnr.

Edited

It's the Irish for fair as in fair haired. I don't think there is any connection with the Norse name apart from sounding similar. Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) is from prehistoric Irish legend. Father of Oisín and grandfather of Oscar. Finley/Finlay comes from Fionn Laoch or fair haired warrior/hero.

Finley obviously or Finlay.
Finbar
Finish
Finland

greengreyblue · 11/07/2024 17:20

Always give the full name- gives the child choice to adapt as they get older. People will assume his name is Finlay.

KirstenBlest · 11/07/2024 18:25

@greengreyblue , but Finlay can be spelt Finnley, Finlay, Findlay or Finley, and I for one would not assume that Finn was short for anything.

Nobody in Ireland would ever assume that his name was Finlay.

I met a young man called Finnegus recently. Fabulous name.

sincup · 11/07/2024 19:03

Finlo

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 11/07/2024 19:08

Another vote for just Finn
