Last post.... I hope!
Juliet. What do you think? Is it likely to be shortened? Is there teasing potential with Romeo and Juliet or should we be okay?
It's the name I loved for a girl as a teenager but got loads of along the years.

Love Julia, hate Juliet/Juliette. It sounds naff & twee with the 'et' on the end.

A beautiful name - bravo!

I see what you did there!

OP, it's a gorgeous name. I always bang on about this but it's nicest pronounced the English way with the emphasis on the first syllable, not like the French Juliette.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 10/07/2024 22:21

Beautiful name. Really classic.

SummerRose999 · 10/07/2024 22:34

Thank you! I think the search is over.... Juliet is feeling like it could be "the one" right now. Makes me smile when I say it, which I think is a good sign. And I love Ettie too, if we end up using a nickname I'll definitely steer to that not Julie or Joules.

Absolutely my favourite girls name and I would have used it if I had a girl (2 boys!)

again, not keen on the standard shortenings of Jules/Julie but I would just use the full name or even Jet or Ettie

Jessieshome · 11/07/2024 12:25

Absolutely beautiful!

I'd spell it Juliette though if not told otherwise.

I'd be very adamant with all that met her though that it is Juliette, not Jools/Ju/Julie. Ettie is cute, and way better than Jools etc, but nowhere near as beautiful as Juliet/Juliette.

MistyHazelFox · 11/07/2024 13:16

I love name Juliet - with July or Jet nicknames, but others are also nice. I'm not fan of Juliette spelling.

littleapplecottage · 11/07/2024 14:27

I love the name Juliet, I'm not sure I've ever met one in real life, shame it's so underused

MrsSamR · 11/07/2024 14:44

I always find it funny/interesting when Juliet is floated as a potential name on Mumsnet as people are always so positive and no one brings up the Shakespeare/suicide reference and just say it's a beautiful name and yet when Ophelia is mentioned all people can talk about is her sad story and how they could never use it for that reason! Makes no sense to me. I have an Ophelia and another female Shakespearean name for my 2 girls' names so it works for me! Just find it an interesting double standard.

IamaRevenant · 11/07/2024 15:28

My sister is a Juliet so I'm obviously biased when I say it's lovely!

It does get shortened to Julie though, even though she herself always uses the full name.

She also gets the Ali G song sung at her all the time, which is annoying! Probably a lot less likely as time passes though and I very much doubt anyone is going to be singing to your small child about her 'big babylons' 😅

Interesting. Perhaps it's because people often forget or rather ignore and gloss over the dreadful, tragic double suicide ending of Romeo and Juliet and only ever remember or think of it as a story of young love and star crossed lovers?

Ophelia is beautiful too. There's a lovely song called Cry Ophelia. I think it might be a sad song actually! I can't remember the lyrics but it's lovely, it was in Dawson's Creek.

This 💯

Ive adored the name Ophelia (as much as Juliet ) ever since I saw a feminist play that did “Hamlet” from Ophelia and Gertrude’s perspectives. Though I assume the reason people mention Ophelia’s suicide and not Juliet’s is because until recently Ophelia was a very rare name - luckily it’s surging in popularity now so most people won’t only have that association anymore. Juliet on the other hand has had small but steady numbers for decades so has more associations for most people than just the play/ pop culture ones.

True! Although I think with R&J the association is one of true love, whereas Hamlet was a bit of an arse and Ophelia went mad... slightly less romantic!

I still love the name Ophelia though, and I also love the alternative spelling (Ofelia - Pan's Labyrinth!)

Ettie is a super cute nickname for Juliet. I think Juno and Jude are lovely also. I'd be sure to establish a nickname early on to avoid one that you don't like.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 11/07/2024 21:41

I don't like ophelia because you can say ' ophelia tits'

Greyblind09 · 11/07/2024 21:45

Lovely name

Great name though I prefer Julia.

BeNavyReader · 06/02/2025 01:58

My little Juliet is Juju 🥰
always gets a positive response

aramox1 · 06/02/2025 04:48

Lovely. But Ettie is a shortening of Ethel, not Juliet! Jay is another Juliet abbreviation I think.

EcruCardigan · 06/02/2025 09:44

Juliet is pretty but be prepared for some saying it as Julie-ette. (cf. Janet/Janette, Danielle/Danny-elle).
Highly likely to be shortened to Jules.
Ettie - far too close to Yeti.

Use it as a middle name.

One of my best friends is called Juliet but gets it pronounced the French way. I love the name. I do think she was called after the TV show though, her mum was obsessed with Juliet Bravo. The character wasn't even called Juliet, I think it was Kate!

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/02/2025 11:45

Love it

bluebunnys · 06/02/2025 11:55

Surely only if spelled Juliette?
