My favourite baby boy name is Louis, husband loves Jenson. Which do you prefer?

Two of my DC had a Louis-said-Lewis in their class!

Most non French pronounce Louis as Lou-is.
For example St Louis in Missouri

Louie is the more popular spelling in the UK for that reason

JimNast · 11/07/2024 09:24

Can you imagine a Prince Jenson? Smile

saraclara · 11/07/2024 09:31

Sorry, but Jenson is awful. I'm not usually a snobby person, but that name brings out the worst in me.

lilyathena · 11/07/2024 09:32

Louis definitely. Jenson, I don't like at all.

JimNast · 11/07/2024 09:34

The standard pronunciation of Louis is Louie. Louie looks femimine or misspelled.
The 'lewis' I know is Lewis, which is fine.

Not true at all.

Louis Armstrong
Louis Theroux
Louis Tomlinson
Prince Louis
Louis Walsh

All spelt Louis and pronounced Lou-ee. Like it’s supposed to be.

I can’t think of anyone spelt “Louie” (which surprise surprise autocorrects to Louis) except King Louie in The Jungle Book.
Nor do I know any Louis pronounced Lewis.

JimNast · 11/07/2024 12:41

@SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit , Louis Armstrong is pronounced Lewis Armstrong. I agree about the others.

Louie is the most popular spelling currently in England and Wales, that is a fact. Search the names on dark greener, or look up on ONS. https://names.darkgreener.com/#louis

There might be more famous Louis’, but Louie spelling is used more. I much prefer Louis though myself.

Edited to add - I might have missed the point of your post. Yes Louis is still normally pronounced Lou-ee in the uk, not Lou-is like pp said!

It definitely isn't! Louis Armstrong is definitely pr loo-ee.

NoDishiRishi · 11/07/2024 12:46

Or Loui as one of the kids at school spells it 🙈

JimNast · 11/07/2024 13:08

@TheTripThatWasnt , he said it as 'Lewis Armstrong'.

WestendVBroadway · 11/07/2024 13:21

I love Louis ( pronounced Louie) not keen on Jenson, however it is your child so your decision. Many people do not like the unusual name I gave my DD( she likes it fortunately) but that has absolutely no bearing on what I think.

pinkpirlie · 11/07/2024 13:33

In case it bothers you, there are sooooo many Louis/Louie born in the past 12 months. I would say around 40-50% the new baby boys in my circles (I have a 9 month old). No other name has come up multiple times. Perhaps it is a regional thing, but who knows!

Where are you based? I have 3 children under 6 and don’t know a single Louis/ Louie born in the last 5 years amongst my family/friends. It’s all Ezra, Jude, Theo, Arlo, Frank(ie), Luca/Lucas around here!

I think Louis is the much nicer of the 2 op

pinkpirlie · 11/07/2024 16:11

@Bumbletown in the midlands. I know at least 6 Louis/Louie born in the past year. The only other name that popped up a few times, but no where near as often, is Arthur.
It must be a new trend perhaps. My little one is only 9 months and before that I had no contact with small children.

Oh wow! Maybe a localised trend. Interesting how that happens. In my world that seems to be Frankie and Ottilie - I know at least 6 of each, yet neither seem to be that high in the charts!

ffsgloria · 11/07/2024 16:24

Louis definitely, much more classic sounding.

Blink282 · 11/07/2024 16:33

I think they both sound like “naughty names” if i’m completely honest, but Jensen much more so.

twentysevendresses · 11/07/2024 16:50

Not Jenson! Awful name!

Louis is lovely 🥰

DinnaeFashYersel · 11/07/2024 16:50

Louis or Lewis is great.

Jenson is awful.

Whilst the spelling Louie has overtaken Louis in the name charts in the last few years, I strongly disagree that 'most' people here would pronounce Louis like Lewis. Maybe in America, but in the UK it's definitely still pronounced correctly by most people! Even more so since the birth of Prince Louis I would say.

I understand why some people are opting for Louie, as they fear mispronunciation of Louis, but it's such a shame that the classic spelling isn't the most commonly used here any more. Not that there's much in it, mind. Louie has only ever been a few places ahead of Louis since it first overtook.

Most non French people don't pronounce it incorrectly, perhaps most Americans do but then they pronounce all sorts of English words in a different way to other English speaking countries including England.

I have never come across anyone called and spelled Louie in the UK but have in the US

MerryMarys · 12/07/2024 07:56

In Germany Louis is pronounced Luis

It's only the French who don't pronounce the S in Louis

That's probably why the Louie spelling is becoming more popular in the UK
