Safiyyah is going to spend her whole life telling people it's not Sofia. The others are less likely to get misheard and mangled.

Lila, Darya, Alara, Amina should all get spelt right too

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2024 14:12

They look like Islamic names not specifically Turkish names.
I only know Anaya as a name, not Inaya. Anaya and Amaya seem to be every other girl's name where I live, and don't sound that great when you hear them a lot.

Safiyyah will blend into all the Sophias and Sofias.

Is there any reason why you want a British/Turkish name?

AprilAutumn · 01/07/2024 15:54

Hello, it’s because we are a British / Turkish couple. You are correct thinking they are also Islamic names. I’m so intrigued that you hear lots of people called Anaya/Amaya because I have never met one. I’m in South England and Wales a lot, so maybe depends on where live in UK? It’s quite tricky finding a name everyone can pronounce 😅

I used to know a Suraya and always thought it sounded pretty.

Forrestt · 01/07/2024 16:28

the two Turkish girls I know are Melis and Alayna (not sure of spelling but this is how it’s pronounced!)

Hatfullofwillow · 01/07/2024 16:30

Donna?

@AprilAutumn , the Amayas and Anayas are primary school age or younger. I'm in the SE and in a multicultural neighbourhood. One of the neighbours and a colleague have one so I hear the names a lot and notice it more if I hear it when out and about.

Both names are on a steep upward curve on Darkgreener, and could have different spellings, and they fit in with names like Maya which are popular. It might not be overpopular where you are.

The question about 'why Turkish?' was because it could be because you were British Turkish, mixed British and Turkish, other reason for wanting a Turkish name.

Hello,

I’m not sure what Darkgreener refers to but interesting to hear that you hear the name a lot in South East.

I answered the question about why Turkish above. Of course, don’t need to explain my cultural background because anyone could use a Turkish or British name as you suggested could be other reasons.

However, yes I am British (English and Scottish) and my partner is Turkish and Kurdish. We would like a name from each country (UK and Turkey) for our daughter.

thanks for your feedback on the name :)

these are the names of the people I know:
Thalia - Turkish
Nora - Kurdish
Fadi - Turkish
Maryam - Turkish

Huskyfat · 01/07/2024 20:44

Oh and I actually know a little girl whose both parents are Turkish called April and just remembered it looking at your NN

WhyamInotvomiting · 01/07/2024 20:51

My daughter has one of those names OP.

Safiyyah and various spellings has become increasingly popular where I am, in Muslim families from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds. I've met quite a lot of children with that name aged 8 and under.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2024 20:57

Cool, @AprilAutumn . In that case, I'd go for something with a Kurdish or Turkish link, and it's lovely that you want names with meanings and represent the heritage.

I was thinking of someone who was named after where the parents went on honeymoon, and although it could seem naff, it's a nice name and the connection is quite romantic. (I'm glad my parents didn't thoughSmile)
And there's the Cameron baby, born unexpectedly when the parents were on holiday and given a Cornish middle name, which is special. She's probably a teenager now.

Ayla pronounced the same as Isla

AprilAutumn · 01/07/2024 21:02

That’s beautiful! I don’t think we can call her after the honeymoon because she’d be Buda or Pest lol 🤣 thank you for your support and advice x

That’s lovely! Thank you for your name suggestions too. It’s my birthday month - April. Baby is due in September, and I’m told people also use the name of September in Turkish (Eylül)!
