FLOSSIE - help a girl out

ktsch · 29/06/2024 04:14

I love the name flossie
It's sentimental as I was floss as a pet name as a child. (Yorkshire obviously)
I don't want to use Florence as we know many but I don't like nicknames as real names.
I know it's term of endearment for any little girl but I would love to make it more of an actual name.
I know flora is also an option but I can't help but think of cheap butter 😂

Felicity might work

songaboutjam · 29/06/2024 05:04

You might find this old thread from 2012 handy. Felicity is a good suggestion. I thought Candace was also rather creative, but it feels a little dated.

In fact most of the ideas I can think of feel dated (like Candace), posh (like Flavia) or American (like Finlay).

I currently teach a 'Tilly' (short for Matilda) who gets called 'Floss' at home (Tilly Floss) which sometimes becomes Flossie. It's a very cute nickname, but she's 7, so 🤷‍♀️ I'm
sure she'll appreciate the opportunity to be Matilda at times when shes older.

Kioki · 29/06/2024 05:13

Why don't you have Flossie as a middle name then it's up to her when she's older? You can call her by her middle name but her official name will be something more grown up?

Alternative I know someone called Florrie which could be NN Flossie?

Lifeofasd1 · 29/06/2024 05:24

I really think your nostalgia is clouding your judgment. As cute as it might have been for you, it is possibly one of the worst names i could think of. Im sorry, there is no way to sugar coat it..flossie like as in flossing your teeth..oh god no..am sorry, but it doesnt even sound cute

Mercurial123 · 29/06/2024 05:30

Flora is a beautiful name and so much better than Flossie, which is awful.

Funderthighs · 29/06/2024 06:01

Flossie is a dogs name. I’ve known several Floss/Flossies and they’ve all been animals.

Firsttimebabymummy · 29/06/2024 06:39

Felicity would work

wickerlady · 29/06/2024 06:50

Yes I echo the others. Felicity is nice.
That way when she perhaps becomes too old for Flossie, she actually has her real name to fall back on.

Toooldforthis36 · 29/06/2024 06:51

Phyllis 🤣🤣🤣🤣

MarshmallowPink · 29/06/2024 06:52

Felicity is a beautiful name with a lovely meaning and, as others have said, the best that would work I think!

itsgettingweird · 29/06/2024 06:58

I know an actual flossie.

What's wrong either just using that?

missfliss · 29/06/2024 07:00

I'm a Felicity, Fliss to my friends or Flossy to my family x

Fargo79 · 29/06/2024 07:01

Where I'm from, Flossie is what blokey blokes call their wives and girlfriends. It's like "the missus".

Also makes me think of flossing, that stupid dance that everyone was obsessed with.

I can sort of see why others might think it sounds cute on a toddler or primary school kid, but imagine she wants a serious professional career when she's older - not many people would take a Flossie seriously, rightly or wrongly. I worked in a very male-dominated industry in my twenties and having a name like this would have been hell. I would 100% have used a fake name for work.

I was thinking that too.

‘Cute’ & ‘sweet’ only work for small children & animals.

Meadowwild · 29/06/2024 07:26

You are worried about Flora because of margarine associations but the first thing I think about when I hear Flossie is someone flossing their teeth! As a nickname maybe but not a name.
Flora and Florence are both nice.

^This

And the stuff you use to get bits out from between your teeth.

It's a no from me!

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/06/2024 07:54

I really like Florence or Flora - they are pretty names that suit all ages and naturally shorten to Flossie. I know Florence is popular, but not so much that they’re everywhere. And no-one will think of butter when they meet a little girl called Flora - these slight associations disappear once you meet a real person with the name as they become the much stronger association imo.

ToffeenutLatte · 29/06/2024 09:15

Like PPs I think Felicity is the obvious and very pretty choice if you don't want Florence or Flora (though I think the latter is gorgeous and wouldn't think of the spread). The one I know goes by Flick which I think is quite nice.

I also know someone who recently named their DD Floella. It's not to my personal taste at all but could possibly stretch to Flossie as a nn. Also gives other more grown up options like Flo/Elle/Ella as she ages.

On the subject of dog names - I work with dogs and have known far more four-legged Florences than Flossies, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Upinthenightagain · 29/06/2024 09:18

What about Phoebe? Same beginning and end sound? Fifi is also marginally better than Flossie

Uricon2 · 29/06/2024 09:23

My late MIL was Florence known as Flossie (but only by her DH)

Flora/Florence are nice names. Give her the option of having that to use because many of us would be deeply unhappy to be saddled with that as a given name rather than just a cutesy nickname. If she grows up wanting to be a proud Flossie to the entire universe, she still can be.

PiggieWig · 29/06/2024 09:27

What’s your name? My guess is it isn’t something that Flossie is short for, it’s just Flossie is a popular nickname for little girls, like Missy.

You can call her anything and still use Flossie as a nickname.

Funderthighs · 29/06/2024 06:01

Yes, it's a very common name for sheepdogs.
