I love it, but I have just read a post on a US board where a gentleman with good taste wants to call his son Peter.

All the posters think it is dull and common and that he will be teased.

I said that names like Henry and William are on the up in the US and Peter is sure to become more popular there too.

So what do you think?

Love it or hate it?

(I can't understand why it is so hated in the Us)

Now Give me some peter comments.

I know a baby Peter in the US. He's 2. His brother is Michael.

I also know a 19 yr old Pete. Usually called Petey. He's lovely.

I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid.

branflake81 · 10/04/2008 08:44

I LOVE this name - it's on my list for any future sons!

Anna8888 · 10/04/2008 08:45

Peter is super dull.

Male equivalent of Jennifer.

zippitippitoes · 10/04/2008 08:48

Peter is fine i cant think why anyoine would be teased

Bluestocking · 10/04/2008 09:15

I love the name Peter, it sounds really strong to me. My parents had a friend called Peter when we were kids, he was incredibly cool (sports car, leather jacket, series of gorgeous girlfriends, etc, plus first class degree from Oxford and fab career in television). Mind you, I love the name Jennifer too

EssieW · 10/04/2008 09:17

I like it. Will be on the list if we have another boy.
Don't like Pete though - but also don't like shortening names as a rule anyway.

TwoFirTreesToday · 10/04/2008 10:17

On the up Along with Susan!

Twinkie1 · 10/04/2008 10:22

Think it is boring, ordinary and unimaginative - Peter, David, Michael - all boring IMO - like people have used a family name rather than think one up themselves!

I am in a bad mood today!

podglet · 10/04/2008 10:41

Thank you Anna8888
DP is a Peter, I am a Jennifer (Jen)

I like Peter, very strong names, can't remember the history of the name but am not sure it doesn't actually mean "strong"

I know a little boy of 7 who is a Peter, no probs there at all.

Just going off to be dull somewhere...

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 10/04/2008 10:45

Peter means 'rock' as in the rock of God. V strong name. I love it.

MyEye · 10/04/2008 10:50

I love the name. Good trad underused English name. Thrillingly novel nowadays.

In the US Harrison and Jayden are classy first names. Go figure.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/04/2008 11:00

Go for it, makes a change from the endless stream of Thomas, Ben & Joshua's.

I don't really like the shortened version much - same with Dave, Mike, Dick etc. I suggested Philip for DC4 but DH not having any of it.

kittywise · 10/04/2008 11:01

No won't be teased but personally I find it very boring

singersgirl · 10/04/2008 11:18

Peter is my stepfather's name and one of DS2's middle names. I think it's a good, sensible name. A name I liked for DS2 which is not at all popular now, but was in my generation, is Paul. I know a baby Stephen too.

AHLH · 10/04/2008 14:36

I like, considering it myself if this baby is a boy.

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 14:37

i think it's a really beautiful name, haven't met any children with that name for years.

AHLH · 11/04/2008 09:11

I must have a really dull family - 2 uncles called Peter, dad was Michael, Mum in Jennifer!

jenpet · 11/04/2008 09:36

Another Jennifer with a DH who is Peter. We are so dull.....

MrsMattie · 11/04/2008 09:37

Sorry, but I really dislike the name Peter. it sounds very wet and middle aged to me.

SoMuchToBits · 11/04/2008 09:43

I love Peter. There aren't many children around here called Peter, although quite a few Michaels. We considered Peter for ds, the only reason we didn't use it was because of family reasons (someone in dh's family with that name is not well-liked).

I don't know why people think Peter is an "old man's" name - most of the adult Peters I know are roughly in their 40s or 50s - that's not old is it???

Martha200 · 11/04/2008 10:07

I like Peter but as our surname begins with P too, it was a no no!!
