What are your thoughts on the name Coral?

Would it be too old fashioned? Too "under the sea"?

My son's have top 10 biblical names so this would be a bit out there and not really fit with their names?

The other name I've been thinking about is Grace. But is Grace too boring? Had it's day?

I like Coral! I have known a few of them (all elderly).

Like who, @SilverSimca ?

Well, we probably haven't heard of any of them Grin but my point was more "it is a name, plenty of people are called it" and otherwise it is kind of anecdotal "Coral down the road".
There is a whole list on Wikipedia, actresses, writers, a rally car driver, a
tennis player.

They're not famous then are they.

Surprised by some responses here; of course Coral is a name. It’s been in use since Victorian times, like Pearl and Ruby and Beryl and so on.

I love Coral and think it’s underappreciated. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect many people to assume it was meant to be Carol/e, which is a perfectly OK name but deeply out of favour as a baby name for the present generation. Coral is so pretty in itself and makes me think of gorgeous undersea photographs.

As for the bookies thing, again that seems like a reach. Nobody is going to meet a girl or woman with a nature/gem name and find themselves unable to override the fleeting association with high street shop signage.

My sister's called Coral. There hasn't ever been a time that my brother and I have walked past a Coral betting shop without making a joke 😅😂

I know one who is older primary school age. She’s lovely and it suits her. I haven’t heard of anyone making any negative comments.

@Duh Coral is a name. My grandma's best friend was Coral. And I've taught one in the past.

For me Coral is in the same category as Pearl, Emerald etc. Very old-lady ish. Not my cup of tea but neither is it ludicrous.... A previous poster does make a good point about the betting shops tho.

depends if you actually like coral or not - you are naming your child after a colony of invertebrates. Ok if you like invertebrates

Dr Maria Ogilvie-Gordon was one of the first women to gain a PhD in geology, in 1900. She studied, amongst other geological stuff, fossilized coral She named her daughter Coral.

I think that was incredibly cool - imagine being named after your mother's scientific research!

Alas, no opportunities for cool child naming in my research area.
