Like Lord or like Lord-ez?

Any thoughts or similar names?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Since when is Lourdes in Spain? It's in France and the S is silent.

I would say if you wanted to call the kid Lordez then just spell it as Lordez.

The place is not in Spain, but it is a Spanish name which is pronounced Lor-dez.

Paris Hilton doesn't call herself Par-ee just because it's a place in France!

MateysMusing · 21/06/2024 17:03

@MsMajeika Good point, what matters is how its pronounced in English.

mathanxiety · 21/06/2024 17:07

Loord if referring to the French Marian shrine.

LOOR-dess if the Spanish/ Hispanic name. The R would be rolled, though unrolled would be fine in an Anglophone country.

Doveyouknow · 21/06/2024 17:23

I would probably use the french pronunciation - loord - or the English and expect to be corrected. I did know there was a Spanish pronunciation or that was how Madonna's daughter pronounced it though!

RogersOrganismicProcess · 21/06/2024 17:33

I’d go French pilgrimage 🇫🇷

unsync · 21/06/2024 17:34

Like the place, sounds like gourd.

SuchGreatFun · 21/06/2024 17:35

A bit like Lord, but with the stress on a U sound as in lure.

CheshireCat1 · 21/06/2024 18:03

Lu erds. I’m a northerner.

Totally read that in Paddy McGuinesses voice!

Oldandcobwebby · 21/06/2024 18:13

Loord. I would presume it was after the shrine in France, and pronounce it accordingly.

If I had a thousand children, I wouldn't name one of them Lourdes.

Nobody is saying that Lourdes is in Spain.

Lourdes is a fairly common Spanish given name and it’s pronounced Lor-dez. The French place name is obviously pronounced in the French way. (The Spanish name derives from the French place because it’s an abbreviation of Maria de Lourdes, but that doesn’t affect pronunciation.)

Do not call a baby Lordez, Jesus Christ.

BusyMummy001 · 21/06/2024 18:28

According to Google - if you are referring to the town in France it's 'Lords'; if it is the girl's name as popular in Spanish speaking countries it is lord-ez.

Springwatch123 · 21/06/2024 18:31

Loooords

So a longer, plural, version of Lords

There were some hasty edits after it was pointed out. But overall if someones precious about pronunciation then this is a silly name to pick.

ohidoliketobe23 · 21/06/2024 18:52

Thanks all. More contentious than I imagined 😂 seems I'd be setting them up for a life of mispronunciation and name-spelling on the phone, so that's struck off the list!

Good decision OP.

Squidlette · 21/06/2024 20:18

I do it the way we used to say it in school when we learned about Bernadette (every year):
Luuruds.

As

buidhebeltainn · 23/06/2024 16:24

Loords

Rockmehardplace · 23/06/2024 23:39
