Names you LOVE but would never choose...

For example:

A name associated with a famous celebrity

Something gorgeous but very obviously from a movie/book franchise

Something that sounds way too posh (or not!)

Etc.

I loved the name Merida (from the movie Brave) and was very disappointed to learn that it's not actually a real Scottish name at all! Naming your daughter after a Disney princess seems like something you may regret.

I also saw a TV show once with a character called Persephone, Percy for short. I love it but we are in no way posh enough to pull it off. Sigh.

What are yours?

If I loved it enough, I'd still use it!

Also don't understand the worry about 'posh' names.

Petronella nn Petra
Minerva
Velvet

Rafferty (I probably would use this but I imagine it wouldn’t be popular)

I absolutely love the girls name Dvora but I think it would be too problematic with spelling and pronunciation and so unusual that it would be constantly commented on

A friend has a brother whose 2nd name is St John . . . I love this name so much but, again, it's too problematic with spelling and pronunciation

Triskeline · 19/06/2024 18:34

Merida sounds about as Scottish as Cinderella!

I don’t think anything would stop me using a name I loved other than it being extremely popular. There were always about three other girls with my name all through school, and I was determined my own child wouldn’t grow up feeling that generic.

BingoMarieHeeler · 19/06/2024 18:34

Love the sound of the name Israel. Obviously wouldn’t use. I know a couple of Israels though.

Love the name Omari but again, wouldn’t use as we are as English rose as it gets.

Really like Piper, Harlow, Marley, Carter etc but wouldn’t use as CBA with people around me judging quite honestly.

GentrifiedJen · 19/06/2024 18:43

Veolia - I think this looks so pretty but unfortunately it's the name of a waste disposal company!

Pretoria - I love the sound of this but I think it would cause too many questions for the child

Mireille - such a pretty French name but, alas, only the French seem to know how to pronounce it

Gwalia - the ancient name for Wales - again, it would cause too many questions

AthenaBasil · 19/06/2024 18:46

I love the name Raphael but it’s too out there as we’re both Scottish. I think it’s easier to be more daring and use foreign names for girls more than boys.

Sparklybutold · 19/06/2024 18:50

Merida, river, Vivienne,

MonaChopsis · 19/06/2024 18:54

I secretly love names like Tallulah and Delilah. Think they are a bit much in real life though!

Dfg15 · 19/06/2024 19:00

Guinevere, I think it's gorgeous, but have two girls.and didn't use it.

PippetyPoppetyPie · 19/06/2024 19:03

I love Lana but would never use for obvious reasons.
@BingoMarieHeeler My DD is Piper and we’ve only ever heard nice things about her name!

ajsbd · 19/06/2024 19:07

Gaia - love it but the pronunciation might be an issue.

‘Obvious reasons’?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 19/06/2024 19:10

Azalea (Zalie for short).

‘Obvious reasons’?

Read it backwards.

GagaBinks · 19/06/2024 19:11

I adore the name Myra. The sound of it, the spelling, everything.

Hindley really did a number on that name.

WinterCarlisle · 19/06/2024 19:15

I love the name Isis and really considered it - luckily we had boys….

I also really like Amarachi but we have no Nigerian ancestry (and again, boys).

Silas was another name I really liked by DH hated. Our surname starts with S so might have been an issue if they had a lisp……Same with Sacha / Sasha which I also loved but DH didn’t. I clearly have a thing for the letter S!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 19/06/2024 19:16

I think the name Seraphina is beautiful but I just find it a bit much for a small child to pull off! I'm also not sure what potential shortenings would be and this is an issue for me. I would be full of regret if my child ended up with a shortened version that I really dislike. As a result, all my children have names that are only 3 or 4 letters!

Also love Dmitri but not sure I would use it having no Greek blood between us! I also like Lysander but it's a bit...well...Shakespeare!

LittleGreenDuck · 19/06/2024 19:20

Greta. Nearly used it for DD, well before Greta Thunberg was in the public eye. I'm glad we didn't, but I still love it.

Montgomery. I don't think we're posh enough to pull it off.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/06/2024 19:29

Marsali
Eilidh
Laoghaire

Too difficult for non Scots to spell or pronounce

Andrea - murdered by many accents

Jenna and Callie - my favourite names growing up as was a Blake's 7 fan.

theaa · 19/06/2024 19:32

I love Pearl, and Bartholomew but shortened to Bartie!

TheGriffle · 19/06/2024 19:35

Vada - loved it but not brave enough to use it, plus Dh is a big Star Wars fan and we didn’t want the Darth Vader references all her life

Wednesday - Might have considered it if dd was born on a Wednesday

Juno - also loved this but again, not brave enough to use it.

BESTAUNTB · 19/06/2024 19:41

I like Maxine, Angela, Joanne, Carla and Simone. But I know they sound like the sixth form register circa 1996!

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 19/06/2024 19:44

I love Jesse and Sasha for boys.
