Names you LOVE but would never choose...

For example:

A name associated with a famous celebrity

Something gorgeous but very obviously from a movie/book franchise

Something that sounds way too posh (or not!)

Etc.

I loved the name Merida (from the movie Brave) and was very disappointed to learn that it's not actually a real Scottish name at all! Naming your daughter after a Disney princess seems like something you may regret.

I also saw a TV show once with a character called Persephone, Percy for short. I love it but we are in no way posh enough to pull it off. Sigh.

What are yours?

Sorrel

ricekrispi · 19/06/2024 19:48

Roman - would have used it for a boy but had three girls

CautiousOptimist · 19/06/2024 19:54

Ruby (love it, but can't help but sing the song when I hear it)
Also Alice for the same reason, I just couldn't do it.

I love the name Isis and really considered it - luckily we had boys….

I also really like Amarachi but we have no Nigerian ancestry (and again, boys).

Silas was another name I really liked by DH hated. Our surname starts with S so might have been an issue if they had a lisp……Same with Sacha / Sasha which I also loved but DH didn’t. I clearly have a thing for the letter S!

Omg, we have such similar taste! DD was very nearly Isis. I also loved Cyrus.

I loved Sasha but DH didn't, but we do have an Asher.

Weeping 😂 at 'obvious reasons' not to use Lana -totally unobvious to me! Is it because it means 'wool' (clutching at straws as quite oblique)?

Pinkl · 19/06/2024 20:08

I once worked with woman called Hero, after a Shakespearean character. Her name really suited her and I really liked it but it didn’t make it into my short list.

other names I liked…
Maximillian

Verity
Astrid
Sapphira

Spell it backwards . . .

These kinds of comments baffle me. What are you, twelve?

Pity all those Orlas…🙄

Redberies · 19/06/2024 20:15

Lana is beautiful! Why on earth would you ever read a name/word backwards?

I know a lovely Lana and have never thought of anaL Confused

Redberies · 19/06/2024 20:16

I'd only not use a name if if was super popular and overused.

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 19/06/2024 20:20

Titus (from Gormenghast) or Kelly (after Kelly Jones of Stereophonics) for boys.
Dorcas (7 brides for 7 brothers) for a girl.

All were vetoed by my husband.

Classic primary school playtime activity. I love my name backwards 😄

AdultHumanFemale · 19/06/2024 20:26

Oh. It's like that.

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/06/2024 20:28

Pandora - love it and think Pandy is a super cute nickname but no.

Lancelot - so grand and handsome but no.

I've always always thought Camelot would make a lovely name but again no

And noticing a theme Merlin

BingoMarieHeeler · 19/06/2024 20:29

Oh also I absolutely loved the name Mallory for DD and regret not using it 😢 DH loved it too, love the nickname Mal, so cute. But couldn’t get over mal meaning ‘bad’ so didn’t use it.

Firsttimebabymummy · 19/06/2024 20:32

I really like the name Felicity but I find it a bit frilly so won't use.

& Juno but not brave enough.

evtheria · 19/06/2024 20:36

Elton
Holden
Orlando
Hero
Sabine
Cicely
Stella
Zara

RosaBaby2 · 19/06/2024 20:38

I so wanted to call my son Ira (Eye-rah) but IRA 😢

ToffeenutLatte · 19/06/2024 20:59

I love nature names. Ford is one of my favourites for a boy but it's just too synonymous with the car to be able to use it.

Similarly I think Lenore is such a beautiful name for a girl but I worry she'd spend her life being teased about laundry products.

staybyyou · 19/06/2024 21:10

Valentine, Heath, Sacha, Liam

Stella, Cleopatra, Saoirse

GentrifiedJen · 19/06/2024 21:24

Hermione ~ forever connected with Harry Potter. Thanks a lot, JKR! 😂

Picklewicklepickle · 19/06/2024 21:26

Esmerelda and Tuesday.

I love Betsy but DH wasn’t brave enough so it’s DC1’s middle name.

Surprised by the mentions of Juno, they’re ten a penny round here!

BoobyDazzler · 19/06/2024 21:34

Morgan - love it but it sounds a bit chavvy.

Constance - love it but it’s a bit puritanical.

BoobyDazzler · 19/06/2024 21:35

Oh yes, and Stella! Spectacularly beautiful name but, lager. Dd was very almost Stella and I wish we had now.

staybyyou · 19/06/2024 21:38

I also like Sunday
