Sibling names that start with the same letter

We have a girl whose fairly uncommon name begins with V. It was always her name and always felt right. We’re now trying to think up boy names and we quite like one with a similar vibe but it also starts with a V! It does sound different to our daughter’s name but I’m a little put off using another V name. We can blame the Kardashians for this! Am I being daft?

Reminds me of the Duggars!

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/06/2024 17:15

It's quite normal to like quite similar names. It looks a bit like you picked matching names, but if you love a name use it.

It's naff if you do something like have Sophia, Sienna and Sharlotte.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 19/06/2024 17:18

Mine and my brothers names (both fairly unpopular) start with the same letter..

We're pretty normal unremarkable people & nobody has ever made comments.

I think once you start getting to baby number 3 & onwards is where it starts becoming a "thing"..

Iwasafool · 19/06/2024 17:20

It is a pain in the neck when they start getting post addressed to V. Deliwoman and one opens the post meant for the other.

I did it by accident lol and it's fine.

What I will say is I grew up in a house with people sharing the first letter and the post got confusing. Not so much a problem now as things come via email but I always felt pissed off my parents opened my bank statements and dr letters and said oops sorry i thought it was for me

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/06/2024 17:35

Decades ago I knew of a family where both parents and all four of their children had names that started with the same first letter. Their surname started with that letter too. As you say, @PurpleBugz, there's a lot less post now, but I used to think it must have been a nightmare opening letters in that household.

Justploddingonandon · 19/06/2024 17:42

I have the same initial as my sister and it caused problems with post as mentioned above. I moved out quite young ( not for this reason) so wasn't a problem for long, but still very annoying.

I doubt this will be an issue by the time the children are older. I can't remember the last time I got a letter in the post that wasn't junk mail.

Triskeline · 19/06/2024 17:47

It’s a bit ‘When I was eight I wanted to have five children called Valentine, Vicky, Valda, Vance, and Vienna.’

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/06/2024 18:04

@WorkCleanRepeat , don't you ever order things online?

CeasarS · 19/06/2024 18:12

I have the same initial as my sister. Don't do it. Official mail being opened by the wrong person once they get older and there was a Valentine card that we still don't know who it was intended for 🤣

Anything relating to new bank accounts or investments has to be sent by mail.

Anything tax related will be sent by mail until you opt out.

Parking or speeding fines

Insurance renewals

There's loads.

Redberies · 19/06/2024 18:27

Avoid if possible - it's a pain when letters are addressed to V surname.

Are there no other names you love?

Redberies · 19/06/2024 18:29

Really? Today GS got his approval for postal vote and his new travel cash card, DH got an NHS letter about results of some tests, I got a letter from bank about some changes in conditions on my savings account.

Don't think GS would have been bothered as not terribly personal, DH might not have wanted someone else reading his results, I might be (I*m not) a victim of domestic abuse and not wanting anyone to know about my escape fund.

I can understand there are lots of reasons people might want their post to be private.

Firsttimebabymummy · 19/06/2024 20:36

I have the same Initial and my brother and never been a problem. The names sound nothing alike

Firsttimebabymummy · 19/06/2024 20:38

If brother and sister then letters will be Mr and Miss anyway?

SummerInSun · 19/06/2024 20:47

My brother and I have the same first initial. Never been a problem. Especially not as adults as it's not like work colleagues etc know both of us. And it did mean we could have just one set of name labels for everything

sciencemama · 19/06/2024 20:55

All good to use the same initials for siblings as long as it isn't Victoria and Victor!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/06/2024 21:24

DBro and I were both XY Surname. It wasn't even a problem in the 70s and 80s when people got a lot of post. Actually, I'm wrong - in about 1982 the interest on my kids savings account got paid to DBro's (consecutive account numbers). It was about 65p, and was easily sorted.

DH, DH and I are al XY DifferentSurname. Definitely not a problem now nothing much comes through the post.

HolyMoly24 · 19/06/2024 22:01

My brother and I have take same initials and it has never caused us any problems. No one has ever even mentioned it really.

I'd say go for it if you live the name. As long as it isn't a bit daft like Victoria and Victor...

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/06/2024 22:30

Like other pp, my brother and I have the same first initial. Just happened to be the names our parents liked most ( and as a bonus Mum could use the same name tags on all our school stuff/easy to hand things down🤣). No issue - even for post as it always had Mr/Miss Initial or full name. It’s only Kardashian like if you have a name starting with V too as 2 V names is a coincidence, 3 would be a pattern.

deliwoman1 · 20/06/2024 04:57

Thanks everyone! I did briefly think of the post issue but dismissed it because DP and I barely get any these days! Didn’t think it would be much of an issue for the kids. Anything official usually has our full names and titles anyway.

I agree with three being a pattern. I’m just finding it hard to shake the idea of two V names feeling like a pair! I definitely want to encourage and support their individual personalities.

Also agree that Victor and Victoria would be daft! The names have different vowels so sound pretty different. I’m still on the fence so it looks like we need to keep thinking up more options!

I wonder if we know the same family...were their names all beginning with S and did they have 4 girls? So all 6 initials were 'SS' 🤦‍♀️
