Eve and Steve- thoughts ?

CamdenQueen · 19/06/2024 00:53

We love the name Evelyn for a girl and would shorten to Eve. Only issue is my husband is called Stephen and goes by Steve with everyone bar his parents. Do you think Eve and Steve are too similar? Will they sound silly together? My husband assures me nobody would make the connection or think about them rhyming m. Would appreciate honest opinions

Way too similar - imagine calling St(eve) up the stairs - who would be meant?!

Our former neighbours had children called Jude and Luke and swore that the problem they had never envisaged was calling them from downstairs and both kids saying they thought the other one was wanted, because all that was audible at a distance was a vague ‘Oo’ sound.

CheeseWisely · 19/06/2024 08:44

I wouldn't give this a second thought OP!

Redberies · 19/06/2024 08:53

My dad is named Stephen and they called me Stephanie, literally the female version of his name, and none of us realised until I was an adult

But Steve and Steph sound totally different

sparkleowl · 19/06/2024 08:55

OP…….just don’t do it.😄

namesnamez · 19/06/2024 09:41

Parent and child? Absolutely fine. Steve Jobs' daughter is named Eve. I don't think this was ever mocked in MSM or on social media.

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 19/06/2024 10:33

I think, if you give your child the same name as you - or the direct opposite-sex equivalent (which don't usually rhyme anyway) - it's not quite as noticeable, because of course the same name will sound the same.

When they are completely different names, but they happen to rhyme, I think it seems more obvious.

But then, I'm the person who always chuckles every single time when a certain TV news reporter signs himself off with "Dominic Hughes, BBC News" Grin

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/06/2024 10:36

Would anyone mock you if your father was someone like Steve Jobs?

Hughes' News sounds like a newspaper shop. Smile

OnTheRightSideOfGeography · 19/06/2024 10:59

Not to derail, but if Steve Jobs' other daughter Lisa's reports are true, he isn't the kind of father anybody would want, however financially rich he was.

Dominic does actually call himself 'hughesthenews' on Twitter!

I wonder how George Foreman coped with that - having five sons all called George (and the same middle name as his own)? And one of his seven daughters called Georgetta as well?!

namesnamez · 19/06/2024 11:53

I said online. People will mock anything. And Jobs/Apple are hated by many, many people. His narcissism was legendary, giving his child a rhyming name could have easily invited ridicule but I don't remember it ever becoming a 'thing'.

RailwayCutting · 19/06/2024 11:54

Maybe not siblings but OK as father and daughter

Firsttimebabymummy · 19/06/2024 12:04

It's fine but Evelyn would most likely get Ev as a nn. I really like Ev but worth considering incase you don't!

The Evelyn I know gets Evvie (like Effie) at school!

RuthW · 19/06/2024 12:16

It's fine. Some children have the same name as parents anyway.

mum1345 · 19/06/2024 12:19

My partner is Joe (Joseph) and we have a little one called Beau (who is 11)
We've come this far without any problems! 😂
Go for it! If you love the name use it 😊

ATribeCalledQuestion · 19/06/2024 12:21

I think this is a non issue! Lots of kids have literally the same name as one of their parents. Siblings might be slightly different I guess, but I cannot see why it would be an issue for Eve's dad to be called Steve

It's fine. Some children have the same name as parents anyway.

I've always wondered how that doesn't get very confusing for the family - so the others call out a name that is shared by two people in the house and they don't know which of them is wanted/being addressed.

The purpose of a name is that it's your own individual identity in the family, although you will obviously invariably share it with other people from outside your family. There are tens of thousands of different names out there; it absolutely baffles me when the only name that a parent can find that they like happens to be the same as their own name.

I mean, when our DS (only child) was very little, he tended to give all of his teddies the same name as him, as his pool of known names was very limited and small children are naturally self-centred; but to be naming an actual human baby, that does usually suggest that you will be an adult, with a much wider field of reference.

SummerSnowstorm · 19/06/2024 12:25

The Evelyn's we know are shortened to ev and evvy (eh-vee) rather than eve or evie, fits better with Steve if you do that too.

AIstolemylunch · 19/06/2024 12:28

yes NN Evie - Evie and Steve is fine. Or start calling him Stevie :)

I know a married couple called Andy and Mandy and nobody bats an eyelid so this seems like a total non issue to me

Their surname isn't McKay, is it - like in the old White Heather Club song?!

Evelyn Waugh's wife was also called Evelyn - their friends referred to them as Hevelyn and Shevelyn to distinguish!

MerryChristmasToYou · 19/06/2024 12:32

This is why young children shouldn't be allowed to name their siblings Smile

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 19/06/2024 13:03

I think it’s ok but my god there are soooo many Evies/Evelyns.

Not where I’m from! It wouldn’t be overused at all

Thanks everyone for your responses. I’m glad it doesn’t seem to be a big deal to most. I didn’t know about Steve jobs and agree, nothing has been made of it over the years

@CamdenQueen , you're not in the UK then presumably.

He didn't!

They all have unrelated nicknames - Monk, Bigwheel, Red, etc
