Lysander pronunciation?

tessdurbyfield · 16/06/2024 10:50

We really like Lysander, possibly nickname Xander.

However, perplexed as to how it should be pronounced and wondered whether it's regional like bath or barth.

I thought it would be Ly-saRn-der, then Xander pronounced with a similar 'ah' sound as this is how we would pronounce Alexander where we're from (South)

Seems online like many pronounce it Ly-Sand-er, in which case presumably Xander would be a short 'a' sound which doesn't sound right with our accent.

Thoughts?

Please don't name a child Lysander, it's unbelievably cringey and pretentious. Give him a real name

Benshawsberries · 16/06/2024 20:19

I’m northern and it would sound like ly-sand-ah

Benshawsberries · 16/06/2024 20:19

I don’t mind it though!

thinkfast · 16/06/2024 20:20

Londoner here. It's 100% lySANDer as in sand.

Just look up any clip from a midsummer night's dream.

Yes but looking for the English pronunciation not American. I know a Xander and he is X-ah-nder but then obviously it doesn't match the short Ly-SAN-der pronunciation. Gah so confusing!

If you want the proper British pronunciation, watch this video. Skip forward to about 1:38 if you can’t be bothered to watch the whole thing.

How do you get Xander from Lysander? It would have to be Lyxander for that.

twentysevendresses · 16/06/2024 20:26

I have a 'military' accent (so pretty neutral) although I'm from the north west (you wouldn't know this from listening to me speak though).

I would say (and I've only ever heard it pronounced) Lie-sand-er. Same with Xander...zand-er.

As someone said upthread, you don't go to the beach and dig in the 's-ar-nd' do you?

What a dickhead thing to say.

Lies under (the bedcovers!)
Grew up in Sussex so most of my vowels travel a long way.
What about Leandros? Still Greek and means Lion Man. Or Lysandros which apparently means liberator.

Cheers everyone, useful stuff (apart from EnglishBluebell - bet your kids are called Amelia or Jacob)

Im northern and know a Lysander - locally it’s pronounced Ly sand duh.

He gets Sandy an awful lot.

And yeah read The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous - great book

Would be interesting to know where everyone is from and if it matches their pronunciation!

South coast England, would say Alex - an - der or “Zander” for Xander, as would everyone I know in this region.

DiscoBeat · 16/06/2024 21:38

Lice-Ander

Notellinganyone · 16/06/2024 21:40

Definitely Lie- San-der is the UK pronunciation. It’s a Greek name but pronounced very differently in Greece!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/06/2024 21:41

Estuary accent
Lie SAND err
Sandy is cute for short

Notellinganyone · 16/06/2024 21:41

It is a real name. Just as real as Alexander.

English pronunciation is not sahnder though . It is Zan - der.

Ly San der is the correct pronunciation.

Revelatio · 16/06/2024 21:41

Xander doesn’t work as a nickname, the ‘X’ is usually because you’re American and your name is Alexander and the X is part of the name! Sander would be the usual nickname for Alexander and Lysander in the UK (it’s more likely Sandy for Lysander where I live).

You don't want PP to be mean about your choice, but happy to be mean about someone else's.

@MenFEARtheDEERE - Lisandros is the non-anglicised form of Lysander. It’s the same name. I wanted to call DS this but it’s much more beautiful in a Greek accent l

Southern accent here and we pronounced Sandra with a ‘dark’ A ie Sarndra.
The same, of course with Alexander. I prefer Lysander to match. I don’t think the pronunciation of a name in a play by Shakespeare has much bearing because the English accent then was rather different. Also the name is pronounced in syllables Lys—anda and not Ly—sanda
