Elegant & Traditional Girl Names

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help. I love elegant, classic names that are established without being super popular like:

  • Verity
  • Allegra
  • Felicity
  • Charlotte
  • Persephone
  • Mary
  • Lavinia

But for one reason or another (mostly DH/ knowing someone) can't use.
We also won't use any Greek/Roman goddess names, although I love how they sound.

Any ideas? X

Imogen
Carmen
Alexandra
Madeleine

(Not that familiar with all the Greek god names so apologies if any of the above are excluded!)

We love Imogen! Defo a contender. We do have someone close with the name but might go for it anyway at this point! X

If your DH is worried about your DD having an unfashionable name I really wouldn't worry. Names are so diverse now and the kids don't bat an eyelid (I'm a teacher). She might be the only Dorothy in the school but nobody would react to it as if it were odd.

The virtue names are beautiful:
Faith
Hope
Charity
Grace (very common so avoid if that bothers you)
Clemency (my favourite)

DH and I LOVE Charity!

But never met anyone British with that name so not sure if it'll get a few funny looks? X

If you are a practicing Christian, how about Christabel? It was on my own list but it literally means “beautiful Christian” (and I’m agnostic). I love that it’s traditional yet underused with cool namesakes in Suffragette Pankhurst and the eponymous Gothic Poem by Coleridge (“The lovely lady, Christabel, whom her father loves so well…”). Potential nn’s galore too - Kit/Kitty, Belle/Bella, Tabby, Chrissy…

JulesJules · 15/06/2024 22:57

Was just coming on here to say Christabel!

Also Helena, Greek but not a goddess.

AnonAnonmystery · 15/06/2024 22:58

Eliza ?

JulesJules · 15/06/2024 23:04

Another notable Christabel is Christabel Bielenberg ('The Past is Myself' for anyone who hasn't read it)
