It’s late, DH won’t stop going on about it so I’m keen to hear opinions.
As mentioned in last post DH and I are expecting our first baby girl. We had somewhat settled on Camille as the first name.
In some browsing we both loved the name
Apolline. DH is French and I am Norwegian but we agreed a name that works best in French makes more sense for us.
DH hasn’t stopped mentioning Apolline since. Now I love the name I really do, maybe more than Camille, however I have a few concerns

  1. Will British people pronounce it as “Appo-lyn or appalling” ?
  2. Nicknames - Polly? Appo/Appi?
  3. Is it hard to wear? Especially with our surname being Montaigne I’d worry it sounds a little pretentious and could be hard to pull off?

So thoughts on Apolline?

Apple-een

Makes me think of cleaning fluid ingredients derived from fruit like limonene, or citronella.

Much prefer Camille.

I'd say Ap-oh-line

It will inevitably get shortened to apple at school I fear. It you know, it's cute and she can go by Polly if she wants

I am French and I LOVE the name Appolline :) Suggested it to DH who doesn't and we live in the Uk so it is hard to wear here, but that said if you both love it, go for it, Apolline Montaigne is seriously gorgeous. Camille is a bit overdone in France, and dates IMO.

Think it sounds like

Appalling
Trampoline
Pauline

Sorry

Kids these days grow up in a much more multicultural Britain. Say it once and people will get it, even if they don't know it written down. I really don't think we should go back to the days where everyone stuck with Clare, Louise and Nicola.

In my head, I said it as A (as the 'a' in hat') - pol - eeen

so it comes out very much like Apple-eeen.

I don't know if that helps, or not.

How should it be said ?
