Apolline

It’s late, DH won’t stop going on about it so I’m keen to hear opinions.
As mentioned in last post DH and I are expecting our first baby girl. We had somewhat settled on Camille as the first name.
In some browsing we both loved the name
Apolline. DH is French and I am Norwegian but we agreed a name that works best in French makes more sense for us.
DH hasn’t stopped mentioning Apolline since. Now I love the name I really do, maybe more than Camille, however I have a few concerns

  1. Will British people pronounce it as “Appo-lyn or appalling” ?
  2. Nicknames - Polly? Appo/Appi?
  3. Is it hard to wear? Especially with our surname being Montaigne I’d worry it sounds a little pretentious and could be hard to pull off?

So thoughts on Apolline?

I know one. She is always known as Apple.

OldTinHat · 09/06/2024 11:18

I read that in the same way as 'trampoline'.

No one wants their daughter being jumped on her whole life.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/06/2024 11:20

I really like it, but I think it's one of those French names which, although it's not likely to be mispronounced that much by Brits, it just won't sound nearly as nice when not said in a French accent.

TheaBrandt · 09/06/2024 11:21

I would wonder how you had time skipped and given birth in the Roman Empire.

Wishimaywishimight · 09/06/2024 11:27

People might hear "This is A Pauline"!

elsbelss · 09/06/2024 11:45

Thank you everyone, I think it’s set we will use Apolline, I like the connection to Greek mythology.

Now the issue is middle names - we love Manon as a middle name, but also feel there should be something Norwegian (well Scandinavian) in there so maybe Linnea or my maiden name Hansen. I think I love Apolline Manon though!

OP posts:
SwedishEdith · 09/06/2024 11:51

It's a gorgeous name - love French girls names. But isn't Linnea too close in sound to the "line" bit?

TM1979 · 09/06/2024 12:08

I don’t like it. Sounds like a cleaning product. Better to just call her Polly. You should have stuck with Camille. Beautiful name.

GU24Mum · 09/06/2024 13:27

I've got French friends with an Apolline and also a Camille (though a male one).

I think the pronunciation would be easier for Apolline than some other French names once people know what it is (like the various ways to say Maya etc).

reelcat · 09/06/2024 21:01

Apolline Manon is gorgeous!

You both love it, so that's the name.
I wouldn't worry about it sounding pretentious.
Without checking, I would pronounce it AH-poh-Leen. The same emphasis on the initial A as in Apollo.
Be aware that it might get confused with the English name Pauline (which isn't a great name).
And Appi as a nn sounds like happy with a dropped H.

GiantTagliatelle · 10/06/2024 02:16

I’d stick with Camille, it’s lovely.

Apolline sounds like Trampoline and kids are cruel.

LauderSyme · 10/06/2024 02:23

Apolline Manon Montaigne is beautiful and classy. It's not pretentious just obviously French. The name reminds me of the poet Apollinaire. Go for it.

I would say it Ah-Poh-LEEN. I don't think Linnea works with Apolline as a middle name due to the repetition of 'Lin', and Hansen is not nearly as nicely musical as Manon.

kanet · 10/06/2024 02:24

British people will struggle yes.

and it will be misheard all the time on the phone

maybe Adeline would work better?

LauderSyme · 10/06/2024 02:29

God, British people are such uncultured swine sometimes, and so English-centric. I say that as a Brit.

Call her the name you love. I remember years ago when some Brits struggled to pronounce the Hindi name Shilpa. Idiots.

mathanxiety · 10/06/2024 03:51

I love it. It has a lot more oomph than Camille.

You could have Lena ("Leena") as an abbreviation.

mathanxiety · 10/06/2024 03:58

Apolline Manon would be lovely.

Apolline Iben
Apolline Solveig
Apolline Camille
Apolline Elisabeth
Apolline Emma
Apolline Anna
Apolline Ingrid
Apolline Astrid
Apolline Amalia
Apolline Alma
Apolline Olivia

Agree.

OP, don't dumb it down. Don't pander to the stupid.

Heirian · 10/06/2024 04:51

Apolline Montaigne is gorgeous.

Polly or Lina would be my shorts if in Britain.

I adore Apolline Linnea, looks great written down too which is how middle names are most often encountered irl. Manon is lovely too but I love the cadence of Apolline Linnea.

For the people saying Apolline "sounds like trampoline," I just..no. It doesn't.

brittanyfairies · 10/06/2024 04:57

I work with kids in France, the only Apolines I know are lovely, so on that basis I think it's a great name and go for it. I've never actually heard it shortened.

MademoiselleChanel · 10/06/2024 05:05

I'd pronounce it Ape-Oh-Leane
It's not as pretty as Camille.

But English people will pronounce Camille wrong too.

Cam-eel
Rather than Cam-eeuh

If you see what I mean.

Of the 2, I'd go with Camille. Much prettier.

gwanmen · 10/06/2024 05:08

Sounds 'Appalling' (sorry!). Love Camille though

PleaseletitbeSpring · 10/06/2024 05:56

Camille has a very different pronunciation in French than in English. I'd stick with Apolline.

KirstenBlest · 10/06/2024 13:10

People will hear it as Pauline. I much Polly to Camille, and I'm not sure if -mille Mont... flows all that well.

Manon's OK but I know dozens of them - it's a popular Welsh name. Maybe it's more unusual in France.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 11/06/2024 16:24

I think Camille is way nicer. Polly as a nickname is alright though.
