..can't you just choose a name you like - doesn't anyone have a mind of their own anymore ?

I agree. I think that anyone who cares so much is by definition a little déclassé.

edam · 07/04/2008 10:25

If people post asking for opinions, then other posters will give their opinions... and names are a fairly big deal. First impressions for the rest of their lives and all that.

MadameCh0let · 07/04/2008 10:29

I'll give you 6 reasons why people care and try not to give their children Chav names.

  1. Darren
  2. Wayne
  3. Gary
  4. Tracy
  5. Dawn
  6. Sharon

AdamAnt lol! It's perhaps better to be considered déclassé oneself, than to give your child a name that might label him/her in years to come. "délassé" still lol.

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 11:59

I agree with M-C, but surely those names you listed are the Tyler, Jayden, Keiran, Reece, Bradley, Brendan, Harley, Ellis, Logan, Ashton, Taylor, Corey, Jay, Bailey, Jordan, Riley, Harrison, Kyles and Madison, Lacey, Summer, Paige, Brooke, Sienna, Skye, Tia, Tilly, Alisha, Courtney, Shannon and Lexies of today.

NOT names like Dylan, Archie, Oscar, Finlay, Joshua, Lewis, Charlie, Jake, Jack, Calum, Max, Lucas, Isaac, Aaron, Toby, Leo, Freddie, Zachary or Ruby, Megan, Poppy, Erin, Holly, Molly, Millie, Maisie, Jasmine, Caitlin, Georgia, Evie, Isla etc.., because that would be the WHOLE top 100 names! And 95% of 20+ year olds will have tacky, dated names!

OrmIrian · 07/04/2008 12:02

I dislike the term chavvy too. Nasty, spiteful and snobbish. There are some truly awful names in our school but I don't give a toss whether they are 'chavvy' or not.

dizzydixies · 07/04/2008 12:09

great, thanks Ellenjane - I never knew dd2 had a chavvy name

all down to people's personal perceptions of what they consider chavvy or not

all rude in my opinion and if you can't say anything nice about a name someone has chose then don't say anything at all

no harm in saying not to your own taste but no need to label which I personally find tacky in itself

Heated · 07/04/2008 12:14

Maybe because the 30 something Sharon I know loathes her name. DH's older half sister has 2 of these 70s 'chavvy' names and she laughs but winces at the same time, especially if she has to give her full name.

tinylady · 07/04/2008 12:25

Yea thanks Ellen Jnae- my child's name is on your hate list
I am glad you have compiled of your little list and will relish judging any little children with those names
BTW you are wrong. I know many children with those names who are bright and wonderful children
I guess you wouldn't bother to get to know that tho'
Nasty snob

MadameCh0let · 07/04/2008 12:28

I apologise for any offence I've caused. I am slightly obsessed about names. Much more so than the average person. Names that start at the top do roll downwards, this isn't MY personal observations. Anybody read the book Freakonomics??

But if I have said something negative about a child's name I am sorry. I tend to regard names like the housing market or something or the stock market.. I observe them with great interest but also with detachment.

I should be more careful not to crash off careless comments that can hurt people though, so

Youcannotbeserious · 07/04/2008 12:32

Oooh... my baby's chosen name is on the 'OK' list

But, declasse or not, DH won't use it if KK uses it for her DS, which is due just before ours.....

dizzydixies · 07/04/2008 12:32

tinylady maybe we should start a 'mothers of children with chavvy names' support group

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 12:35

That was not a hate list! I like lots of the names on there. I just think they may date. I wouldn't think that the family were the c word if I heard those names. I think the right person can carry any name tbh. I love the name Skye and it would definitely be on my list if I was having a girl.
I know a really really posh family with a Madison. You never can tell these days, most names don't belong to a particular class.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/04/2008 12:37

Well, you did use the word 'tacky'...

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 12:43

see, it always upsets someone ! I'd just have the courage of my convictions and pick a name that I liked and never mind whether it might not be the 'right' kind of name to have

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 12:45

EJ is just annoyed that my personal perception of Finlay is that it should be on her first list and not the second.

It's all about perceptions...........

tinylady · 07/04/2008 12:45

Indeed DD- I like my son's name and the thought of some sneery adult judging him on it makes me

dizzydixies · 07/04/2008 12:46

exactly maryann it is IMPOSSIBLE to choose a name to suit everyone and one that people will approve of so why bother?!

its your choice and they way I see it, not many people grow up liking their own name until they're an adult anyway, as long as you're happy with the choice why bother

I have posted on boards re babynames but thats more because am SO indecisive not because am looking for approval on not being chavvy

didoreth · 07/04/2008 12:46

I'm a mother with a chavvy name (on MadameCholet's list), and I hate it. Though apparently it was quite posh when my parents chose it, and developed the less desirable associations as I got older. Really don't want to lumber my children with names which carry the same kind of stereotypes though.

dizzydixies · 07/04/2008 12:48

diodoreth come be in our group then

needspace · 07/04/2008 12:50

I really wish that you would disclose your childrens names conniedescending.

Youcannotbeserious · 07/04/2008 12:50

I agree with Didoreth...

I have a name my parents thought was really original........ IT'S NOT... It's very 70s, very dated and very common.......

See, that's why, even though I LOVE certain names, I'm concious of the perception 20 years down the line.........

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 12:51

I don't like all this obsession with 'chavness' - it's nasty and snobbish, you can think it in your head but is not nice to express it here - I know people ask for opinions and others will give them, my point was why do people care so much what others think of the names they like.

OP posts:
EllenJane · 07/04/2008 12:52

I'm not annoyed at all connie. There will always be some people who dislike your child's name because of personal perceptions. I'm guilty of that too!

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 12:55

needspace - they're nice names imo perhaps considered to be verging on the poncey side by some.....

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 12:55

Me too needspace. I bet they're really classy.
