..can't you just choose a name you like - doesn't anyone have a mind of their own anymore ?

Oh STFU.
It's a name, choose one you like and stop caring about anyone elses.
Dizzy, remember your DD's names are not chavvy, If I have a girl this time I'll have both the same names

Surprised Ella isn;t on the chavvy names list though tbh, People always say how 'common' it is but it's DD's name and I prefer it to half the supposedly 'ok' names.

BTW, where I used to live, the peopel who would have been classed as chavvy had children called things like Leo, Josh, Lewis, Caitlin, Georgie, Freddie etc, all from the supposed 'ok' list so it's all about opinion. I'm not saying those names are chavvy btw, just knew 'chavvy' people whose children had those names.

needspace · 07/04/2008 12:59

Oh you must have a little Tarquin then Connie?

scorpio1 · 07/04/2008 13:01

ooh i actually love the 'chavvy' names listed below, lol At least 3 of them i have used or have considered using, lol!!

scorpio1 · 07/04/2008 13:02

its 8

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 13:04

She's probably chosen names that might aid her desperation of social status. She seems to be very pleased with herself that they may be classed as poncey. Eye-rollers no doubt.

Miggsie · 07/04/2008 13:05

I know of someone who adopted a Jayden.
He is now James.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/04/2008 13:07

I'm assuming you two have had a run in on another thread because you are being rather, well, unpleasant EJ.

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 13:09

Arguing about names is a totally futile exercise. I see names fitting into groups
e.g.

Felix, Isaac and Ruby
Araminta, Atticus and Octavia
Tyler, Jamie and Ellie-Mae
Benjamin, Sophie and Amy
Willow, India and Heath

..........none of the groups need labels such as chavvy or classy - they just have a different feeling or schema for me. Everyones perceptions of what names fit into which group is different - what's the problem?

Don't take it so personally

needspace · 07/04/2008 13:09

I don't really think there is such thing as a chav name. The only names that I really dislike are made up names or names that are just stupid like Jenna Taylor (knew one at work) or Thomas Thomas (poor chap was always really embrassed when he had to give it out).

I don't like names where it appears that the parents have really tried too hard to find something original and it ends up sounding a bit poncey but that is just my opinion. I also feel a bit sorry for children when they have been given a really old fashioned name because the parents thought it was due a comeback but it never quite happened, I think that a Jayden will have a much easier time at school than a little Wallace and although Jayden is not exactly my cup of tea it makes me think of a young funky cool teenager who is very popular whereas little Wally just inspires images of a bookish chap in the corner who never gets picked for the football team.

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 13:10

fallen madonna - EJ has taken great offence that I am not overly keen on Finlay.

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 13:13

obviously somehow desperate for social status

and yes I am pleased with my childrens names - why on earth would I not be?

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 13:16

No.. I haven't taken offence because you dislike the name we have chosen for our baby. It's the way you 'spoke' to me in the previous post. Like I said I totally understand, I too have altered perceptions by children I know.

EllenJane · 07/04/2008 13:18

I was referring to this..

"perhaps considered to be verging on the poncey side by some..... "

Of course the majority of mothers are pleased by their choices.

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 13:21

If you are implying that my tone was offensive then it was merely in response to yours.

And as for social status, I think the ones desperate to avoid a name that is 'chav' are perhaps most concerend with that particular issue.

scottishmummy · 07/04/2008 13:23

i dont understand the need to ask a bunch of strangers to decide is a name suitable?would you ask random members of the public to pick your shoes- probably not

probably not so why get your drawers in atwist what someone else thinks about your baby name

i like my baby name
i hope youlike your baby name

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2008 13:24

Slightly changing the subject but my sister works in a hospital where twins were recently born and were named Francesca and......
Francesca . It had always been their favourite girls name and they thought it would suggest favourtism if they only gave it to one of the girls. That is weird.

claraquitetirednow · 07/04/2008 13:26

EllenJane and Connie - I am going to knock your heads together!

I can't believe you have turned an innocent question about a perfectly normal (and yes I think nice) name into a row which has spread between two posts!!!

belgo · 07/04/2008 13:26

needspace - I've heard of twin girls Stephanie and Stefeuille (pronounced Ste-filly).

claraquitetirednow · 07/04/2008 13:27

Needspace - what????

claraquitetirednow · 07/04/2008 13:28

The wierdest name I ever came across was "Save the Whales".

Apparently the Registrar took the parents to court to stop them using it. I guess they were trying to make a statement

conniedescending · 07/04/2008 13:30

lol Clara,
I do agree......

Finlay is fabulous - well done EJ! Great choice!

needspace · 07/04/2008 13:30

Lol Clara! I can just picture the parents... Did the parents win?

legalalien · 07/04/2008 13:32

belgo - just as well you are belgium (well, I hope your sister is) - in the UK or down under they'd inevitably end up being called "Fanny" and "Filly", which doesn't have great overtones.

claraquitetirednow · 07/04/2008 13:33

Needpace - no, I don't think they were allowed to use it.

Can you imagine shouting it down the street to get them to come in for their supper: "Save the Whales!! Yer tea's on the table"!
