Annie short for...?

We're not keen on double first names like Anna-Maria but looking for a nice way to have Annie as a NN.

DD1 has a longer name and is exclusively known by the NN so hoping for something similar. Any ideas?

Anne is a lovely, classic name, but it definitely has to be spelled with an “e.” Montgomery’s Anne wasn’t wrong there. The missing “e” changes the look and feel of the name when seen written down.

I'd go with Annie as the full name. I'm generally not keen on nickname type names but I think Annie is one that works. It's cool rather than cutesy.

rosesandlollipops · 06/06/2024 13:10

Leonie, pronounced rhyming with Peony. I love it and with Annie as a NN

CurlewKate · 06/06/2024 13:19

All the Annie's I've ever met have been Ann for formal.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 06/06/2024 21:25

I've known a few people with Annie as their official name but if you would something more formal I'd pick one of these:

Anne, Anna, Annabel, Annette, Anneli, Annalise.

I wouldn't personally use Annie for a name that wasn't actually related to Anne, like Anastasia or Antonia, although I admit there's no logical reason for that.

Why not just Annie if that's what you wish to call her?

If you are only going to call her Annie then put Annie down on the birth certificate. She doesn't need a longer name if you'll never call her that. If you call her a longer name then her friends might refer to her by her full name or a different nn.

Yes, she does. As an adult woman she needs options besides a childish diminutive.

Miranda would be an option.

Annie isn’t a childish name. In fact it’s more old ladyish than anything.

How are you getting Annie from Leonie?

I think Annie on its own is a lovely name!

It's not too common, but is traditional and would suit any careers she may go on to have - professional or otherwise! 😊

honeylulu · 07/06/2024 14:36

Lots of nice suggestions here though nothing wrong with Annie in its own right. One of my great aunts was Annie on her birth certificate.

I know an Annabel who has always been known as Annie. Though I like the name Annabel I'm not sure why her parents didn't just call her Annie!

Annie is quite timeless. The name would suit a 5 year old, 15 year old, 30 year old and 70 year old. It's not like she's calling her daughter Sweetpea, Princess, Buttercup etc. I think Miranda is quite a frumpy name (no offence if you're called Miranda).
