Or
Like Coral without the L?

Short ‘cor’ sound

Grin I love pronunciation threads. Everyone has a different idea about how to represent phonetic sounds in writing and doesn't understand other people's version (often complicated by regional accent variations)!

I'd pronounce it to rhyme with Flora, Dora, Explorer (cue Rhotic speakers disputing the last one). I've never heard it pronounced to rhyme with 'horror'.

Aura and Dora don't rhyme for me

This is the problem with typing pronunciations! Different accents … unless i’ve been pronouncing Dora incorrectly

Like Laura

You can pronounce Laura as L-oww-rah though

I have never heard that in my 31 years of being called Laura!

CelesteCunningham · 01/06/2024 13:35

Core-ah, to rhyme with flora and Dora as others have said. Never heard it said another way. Have two young DDs so have met a few.

molly1995 · 01/06/2024 13:42

Whats the different between coral without the L and Corra?

Is is core- ah vs car-ah?!

Genuinely can't get corra to sound differently to Cora

LongIslander · 01/06/2024 13:43

Pemba · 31/05/2024 20:40

To rhyme with Dora, Flora and Nora.
I wasn't aware there was a different pronunciation?

Exactly. I know Coras in several countries and have never heard anyone pronouncing it otherwise...?

I think maybe the OP meant the 'corra' version to rhyme with Dora (although that would be a bit odd, because normally doubling the consonant makes the vowel shorter, not longer).

SonicTheHodgeheg · 01/06/2024 13:48

Rhymes with Dora

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/06/2024 13:48

I've never heard this from a native English speaker. It's pronounced that way in lots of (maybe even most) other European languages though.

This!

Cyclingforcake · 01/06/2024 13:55

I think in American English it’s more Corra. Listen to how Lady Cora says her name in Downton compared to how the Brits say her name.
Tara can sound more like Terra with an American accent too.

RaraRachael · 01/06/2024 14:04

Core-ah never heard it pronounced any other way

In my mind, if it was to be Corr-ah it would be spelled Corra

Aura and Dora don't rhyme for me

Eh! How would you pronounce these then? 🤔

KirstenBlest · 01/06/2024 15:14

@CJ0374 Laura and Dora don't rhyme for me. Same as aurally and orally don't sound exactly the same.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/06/2024 15:16

I'm curious - those people for whom aura and dora don't rhyme, are you Scottish by any chance?

‘Coral’ (to me) has a shorter ‘cor’ sound like coronation, coraline, corridor

Aura/Dora has a longer ‘caw’ sound. Like Kaur. Core. Caw.

Yep. Scottish and they don't rhyme for me.

Aura would be awra and Dora would be Dough-rah if that makes sense

KirstenBlest · 01/06/2024 15:38

@AllProperTeaIsTheft , I'm not scottish.
The au and the o sound different

The au is like in nought, the o like in note.

Same as aurally and orally don't sound exactly the same.

This is a good example from PP.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/06/2024 15:45

Interesting! I can only imagine the 'o' in 'Dora' sounding like the 'o' in 'note' if I imagine it said in a Scottish accent. In my (SE England) accent it sounds like the 'ou' in 'nought'.

They do to me!
