..for people who want unusual names. I have one child at a school with 1400 children and another at one with 400. I have a very large family with lots and lots of children. The following names do not appear anywhere in my circle and are therefore officially unusual. Feel free to name your son one of the following - Robert, Ian, Timothy, Alan, David, Nicholas, Michael,Tobin, Charles,Felix,Richard, Lawrence, Gregory,Peter,Simon,Marcus,Martin,Piers, Sebastian or Adam.

Or your daughter Jane, Miriam,Perdita,Nicola, Andrea, Lindsay,Shiela, Evelyn Cora,Lois,Margot,Flavia,Charlotte,Erica, Felicity,Kim,Zoe,Cordelia, Jacqueline,Hazel or Christina.

All unusual - and will probably be unique in your lo's school, but will not raise eyebrows or make people judge. All easily spellable. And all suitable for a baby, a teenager and an old person. And for a high court judge or a taxi driver or a lawyer.

I have an Alan and he is 3 not a middle aged accountant

bosch · 05/04/2008 23:15

I have two children at a school with 90 children where there are a Charles, an Adam, a Miriam, a Charlotte and a Zoe.

Maybe it's a regional thing (I'm oop north).

Think some of those names might also be suitable for mad axe murder or hairy knuckled lorry driver too (esp the girls names )

Solitaire · 05/04/2008 23:16

Nope, sorry Martin is not unusual. I'm married to one (mind you he is a bit perculiar, but thats another matter) and I know at least 2 others

seeker · 05/04/2008 23:16

See? I rest my case - I bet he's the only one you know! Proves you don't have to go down the Sequoia route to be unusual!

Solitaire, it's unusual for a baby, though. I defy you to find many Martins not old enough to vote!

QuintessentialShadows · 05/04/2008 23:19

Harrumph. "Public Service Massage". Time for bed.

Solitaire · 05/04/2008 23:21

for god sake, don't tell my Martin he can vote. heavens knows what he'll do with such power

MissPaulaYates · 05/04/2008 23:22

i know a miriam,lois,charlotte,erica,zoe,david,michael,charles,felix,richard,lawrence,gregory sebastian and adam

osyth · 05/04/2008 23:22

Seeker, you have just named half my bloody family! Do we know each other?

RustyBear · 05/04/2008 23:24

There are 5 Charlottes (out of 108 girls) at the junior school I work at. Also four Michaels, 2 Timothys 2 Nicholas Robert David, Charles, Peter Marcus and Adam amongst the 119 boys.

Scramble · 05/04/2008 23:24

Flavia, cordelia LOL loads of taxi drivers called that

purpleflower · 05/04/2008 23:24

I've got an Adam and know a lot of them varying in ages.

edam · 05/04/2008 23:24

I think you are right, Solitaire, blissful ignorance is obviously the way to go.

bluenosesaint · 05/04/2008 23:26

I'm northern - we have lots of Roberts, Charles (Charlie) and Peters, a couple of Sebastians and Gregorys ...and as for Adam - there are three Adams in dd2's Reception Class, prob about 10 in whole school and i know at least another 3.

Girls list - i know a fair few Hazels, Evelyns and Zoes and you can't throw a stone here without hitting a Charlotte!

Lovely names though ...there's a reason that they're popular

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/04/2008 23:26

But the mums looking for unusual names on here seem to prefer the names that are only unusual in their own home.
So unusual in fact that they come across another child of the same unusual name every time they go to the park and have 6 in the class at school.

JustJaamy · 05/04/2008 23:29

So what happens when all of the antenatal threads on MN see your list and we are inundated with children called.....Robert, Ian, Timothy, Alan, David, Nicholas, Michael,Tobin, Charles,Felix,Richard, Lawrence,Gregory,Peter,Simon,Marcus,Martin,Piers, Sebastian, Adam, Jane, Miriam,Perdita,Nicola, Andrea, Lindsay,Shiela, Evelyn Cora,Lois,Margot,Flavia,Charlotte,Erica, Felicity,Kim,Zoe,Cordelia, Jacqueline,Hazel or Christina!

we'll be dying for a Sequoia!

JustJaamy · 05/04/2008 23:34

Hazel......don't know any of those and I'm int' norf too. Agree that Charlotte and Adam, Charlie and Robert are quite common.

Isn't Flavia a coffee machine? And Perdita always remionds me of 101 Dalmations!

seeker · 05/04/2008 23:35

very posh taxi drivers we have round here, Scramble!

(but a taxi driver called Flavia is not anything like as unlikely as a high court judge called Konor or Sunny or Hedgerow or Kyesha or Chardonnay!

Scramble · 05/04/2008 23:38

LOL some parents are crule, but I thinkI missed the jist of this thread, perhaps its the wines fault.

seeker · 05/04/2008 23:42

There isn't really a gist, scramble, - it's just a hobby horse of mine that some people are so obsessed with giving their baby an unusual name that they end up giving the poor little sod a name that'll be a burden all its life. It's perfecly possible NOT to call your baby Jake or Emily an still not give it a name that sounds like a new sort of margarine.

southeastastra · 05/04/2008 23:44

i like michael

SmugColditz · 05/04/2008 23:44

I know 3 Hazels under 10.

carol3 · 05/04/2008 23:45

I work with a flavia pronounced flavi, she's French I hadn't come across it before.
Ds is Oscar and the only one in his school but getting more popular now I think.

SmugColditz · 05/04/2008 23:45

My imaginary daughter will be called Windolene, to balance out the accountant-like names of her brothers.
