..for people who want unusual names. I have one child at a school with 1400 children and another at one with 400. I have a very large family with lots and lots of children. The following names do not appear anywhere in my circle and are therefore officially unusual. Feel free to name your son one of the following - Robert, Ian, Timothy, Alan, David, Nicholas, Michael,Tobin, Charles,Felix,Richard, Lawrence, Gregory,Peter,Simon,Marcus,Martin,Piers, Sebastian or Adam.

Or your daughter Jane, Miriam,Perdita,Nicola, Andrea, Lindsay,Shiela, Evelyn Cora,Lois,Margot,Flavia,Charlotte,Erica, Felicity,Kim,Zoe,Cordelia, Jacqueline,Hazel or Christina.

All unusual - and will probably be unique in your lo's school, but will not raise eyebrows or make people judge. All easily spellable. And all suitable for a baby, a teenager and an old person. And for a high court judge or a taxi driver or a lawyer.

Ah see there are gists and jist biut I can follow neither LOL I wanted unusleal but not silly names, unfortunalty everyone thought the same and paicke the same as ,my DS's name so he is common as muck now. DD still failry unusal despite a soap charactor nincking her name and making it more popluar.

seeker · 05/04/2008 23:53

Oh Lord, is it jist or gist? Haven't the foggiest - my ds is so lucky he's not called Patrik!

LOL

SmugColditz · 05/04/2008 23:56

We decided to call ds1 a very 'normal' name, but one with many spelling variations. When we went to register his birth, we realised we had never discussed how to spell it.

(I won)

Scramble · 05/04/2008 23:56

Perhaps we should have temp names until we grown up and decide on jobs and careers and develop our charactors, perhaps 3 yerly reviews and thern get rebranded

seeker · 06/04/2008 09:09

Brilliant idea - and we could keep the name out batty parents gave us if we choose to be pole dancers!

I have an Iain (hooray, unusual!) and a friend I met when he was 2 weeks old has an Ian. We didn't know each other's surnames for months, and it turned out 6 months later that we have the same surname!

MadameCh0let · 17/04/2008 11:17

Seeker, we have very similar taste in names. My son is Richie (Richard) and my DD is Margot Jane. Are these the kind of names you are considering? They're a great sample. They are unusual without being self-consciously different.

I also LOVE the names Lois and Peter and Gregory, Timothy, Robert. I know a 40 something Gregory and a two Timothys, but no babys. They would work well on a baby. So many people are trying to be a little different and all coming up with the same 'different names'.

I even {hmm] the other day thought Marty is quite cute. Not sure I'm ready for a baby Martin yet though. Baby Gregory would be gorgeous though. It needs to rest a little longer. But in ten years I will think, come on down Marty!

MadameCh0let · 17/04/2008 11:21

Sorry, was presuming that this is your taste. You are just offering up a list of unusual names. Right! I get it.

ranting · 17/04/2008 11:22

It's regional though, I think, I know a few small Erica's (we have a lot of E names here, Ellies, Elsie's etc) and a lot of Rebecca's).
Interestingly Seeker my ds's name is on your list (he's a teen though) and MY name is on their too. Definitely not unusual for my age though.

ranting · 17/04/2008 11:23

Oh and a few Charlottes too.

SoMuchToBits · 17/04/2008 11:29

At ds's school (about 420 people) there are 2 Michaels, 2 Marcuses, a Timothy, a Sebastian, a Lois, a Charlotte, a Zoe and..... 4 Adams.

jumperoo · 19/04/2008 21:57

I do think it is a regional thing. We are in Northern Ireland but due to DH being welsh - our dd has a welsh name so quite unusual/uncommon here!

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/04/2008 19:34

If they are all easily spellable, then how come you have spelt Sheila incorrectly yourself?

Our top contender for dd, should she be a girl, is on your list though, and I don't think that anyone else on here has said that they know one either! Excellent, that would put it in the same sort of category as dd's name, Philippa.

pinkyminky · 20/04/2008 21:59

Allgonebellyup- yay- another Felix, my DS's name. It always gets a positive response from people we meet. And he is a very happy little chap.
