I would say Mee-lah but that is only because of Mila kunis. Amazing how one person can determine a pronunciation. No people have pointed out how Milo is pronounced i can see it is strange to pronounce it that way. Similarly -bit like Maya and being told it is pronounced Mai-ya after Maya Angelou. but no one looking at it phonetically would not think May-a. I just can't look at and see any 'i' sound but somehow one person's pronunciation because the norm

My-La

NetMum2 · 31/05/2024 05:30

I wouldn’t know, and if I needed to, would awkwardly guess either Me-la or My-la.

Saying that, I should add that I do think either is a nice name!

Like Milo

My-lo-a?
Mee-lo-a?

If a person is basically anglophone, they'll want to say My-la.
People with knowledge of European languages will likely recognise its origin and pronounce accordingly; Mee-la.

DiscoBeat · 31/05/2024 08:33

My-Lah but only because I've never come across the name and didn't have a clue.

timoteigirl · 31/05/2024 12:13

Mee-Lah - it wouldn't even occur to me that there were other options.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 31/05/2024 12:34

Me-la

WayOutOfLine · 31/05/2024 12:42

Mee-la, the Eastern European way. It's not my fave name for some reason, I don't know why, although it's pretty written down. I know a couple of Milas.

Grinchinlaws · 31/05/2024 13:04

Mee-la

If I wanted Myla I’d spell it that way.

ElleneAsanto · 31/05/2024 13:07

MEE-la. But sadly confusable with well known upmarket kitchen appliances. Just don’t.

Isitisit · 31/05/2024 13:10

Me-Luh

DuchessOfSausage · 31/05/2024 13:12

I'd never thought of that!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/05/2024 13:12

Mill ah

I have a cousin with this name and that's how it's always been pronounced.

BoleynMemories13 · 31/05/2024 13:57

Personally, I automatically think Mee-la when I see the Mila spelling as Mila Kunis is so well known, but I would always check first as I have known many to be My-la instead. Understandable really, due to the pronunciation of Milo/Miles, and the fact that Lila is usually Ly-la rather than Lee-la.

Personally I prefer My-la, as it's softer. Mee-la just makes me think of mealworms! If looking for My-la though, I think the Myla spelling avoids confusion. I've never heard it said as Miller, personally. Maybe that's a regional thing?

As you have probably realised by now, it's a problematic name which she's destined to have to spell out and have pronounced incorrectly all her life (similar to Maya, Esme, Sara etc). Some names are definitely more complicated than others!

PurpleChrayn · 31/05/2024 14:09

I know a Miller and a Meeler!

Strawberryicecream88 · 31/05/2024 14:10

Meela. It's beautiful

eurochick · 31/05/2024 14:55

I would have expected My-la but there is one at my daughter's school and her name is pronounced Meela.

MrsArcher23 · 31/05/2024 15:25

I never thought of any pronunciation other than Me-la. My-la sounds strange, it's not an English name and therefore has no relation with Miles/Milo

SemperIdem · 31/05/2024 15:46

Me-la

It wouldn’t occur to me to pronounce it another way.
