Blythe?

Could I get your opinions on Blythe? My husband loves it and there is a tradition of "virtue names" in his family. In my opinion the best of those names are already taken in his family and I might have misunderstood the word blythe but I feel like it means a bit indifferent. I like Faye from (possibly) Faith.

Boys we find easier and like Orin, Vincent and Liam equally. I have been unwell and not quite trusting my judgement- are all of these OK?

I love Blythe, and I would think of it as positive. Happy, carefree, a positive outlook.

I think the ‘worst’ it could be is meaning carefree, as in not worrying about the negatives.

It’s also a good sound. Goes with lots of surnames. Rare and unusual but not outlandish. Nicely old fashioned.

Also the poem - ‘And the child who is born on the Sabbath day / Is bonny and blithe and good and gay’

I love Blythe.

No, not a fan sorry. Sounds harsh and too try hard.

MotherOfVizslas · 26/05/2024 23:17

I like Blythe and Faye/Faith.

I've always really loved the name Temperance too.

I quite like Blythe- underused, timeless and stands out in a good way imo (though my favourite virtue name is Verity).

Really like the sound of Orin, don’t understand why it’s not more widely used. Vincent is lovely and elegant ( but I really dislike Vinnie and Vince so…) Liam sounds pleasant in an Irish accent but otherwise I think William is so much nicer.

I love Blythe
My favourite of your boys names is Orin

Sorry... all I can think of is Blythe Valley Business Park off the M42. Couldn't possibly call my child after a business park. So it's a no from me.

PatofSilverBush · 26/05/2024 23:30

I love the name Blythe for either male or female. It reminds me of Gilbert Blythe from “Anne of Green Gables.” Positive connotations.

ConstitutionHill · 26/05/2024 23:33

Love it!

Terrible choice

DeadMabelle · 27/05/2024 07:28

Yes, you are misunderstanding its meaning, which is ‘cheerful’, or ‘joyful’. It’s perfectly nice if you like American surname-y names — I wouldn’t call it a virtue name at all. Those are virtually always nouns (Verity, Faith, Mercy, Constance, Hope, Patience etc), while Blythe is an adjective.

It reminds me of Gilbert Blythe and Blythe Danner.

Really like it.

FayCarew · 27/05/2024 09:09

It's not a virtue name. It sounds ok but I can't unthink Blyth, Northumberland.
It's a nice surname but not a nice first name.

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 27/05/2024 09:11

Captain Blyth comes to my mind yarrr

Coffeegincarbs · 27/05/2024 09:13

It means cheerful (think of the play Blythe Spirit). I know a Blythe and she's lovely!

Wasn’t he Captain Bligh?

Pinkjarblujar · 27/05/2024 09:18

I've always loved it.

CatamaranViper · 27/05/2024 09:31

It's a town near me and it's not a nice town (Blyth). I've never heard it as a name before

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 27/05/2024 10:18

It doesn't mean indifferent. It means happy (though as a normal word it is spelt "blithe"). The reason you think it means indifferent is because it is sometimes used in phrases like "blithely ignoring all my advice" - which means the same as "cheerfully ignoring all my advice." I've heard it used often enough as a girl's name to think it is unlikely to have that association for anyone who hears it.

User364837 · 27/05/2024 10:19

I don’t like it but seems like I might be in the minority. It’s just not a nice sounding word to me

FayCarew · 27/05/2024 11:09

It means happy or carefree, but it can have nuances depending on context.

Nicebloomers · 27/05/2024 14:37

I think it’s a delightful choice.
