Blythe?

Could I get your opinions on Blythe? My husband loves it and there is a tradition of "virtue names" in his family. In my opinion the best of those names are already taken in his family and I might have misunderstood the word blythe but I feel like it means a bit indifferent. I like Faye from (possibly) Faith.

Boys we find easier and like Orin, Vincent and Liam equally. I have been unwell and not quite trusting my judgement- are all of these OK?

I really like Blythe. I know a nice Canadian one.

My favourite virtue name is Honor, if that’s not taken already. I also like Ruth.

All the boys names are fine, I particularly like Orin.

I love Blythe. I wanted to use it for our DD more than 30 years ago but DH vetoed it.

Kittybelle123 · 26/05/2024 20:50

My DDs loved Littlest Pet Shop when they were young. As it goes, Blythe was pretty awesome and held her own. Although she seemed to spend a long time alone (in the company of animals) as a fairly young child.

Blythe is quite cool and American-sounding to me, I quite like it. I also quite like Faye / Faith - although that’s much less cool and more traditional sounding (to me), so it depends what you’re after?

Do you like

Liberty - Libby
Felicity
Verity
Serena (as a variation on Serenity?)

Sorry about the gif 😂 No idea how to remove it!!

I don't know that programme, will have a look. I'm sure I had a school report which said I blithely disregarded instructions, obviously not a positive one!

Really, really like it.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 26/05/2024 21:01

I don't hate it. It reminds me vaguely of Enid Blyton but that's it really.

beefmassaman · 26/05/2024 21:02

It's not my cup of tea. It will probably come back round again, but right now it's in the same ballpark as Enid, Ethel and Honor.

SilverSimca · 26/05/2024 21:02

I like it and I think of Blythe as meaning happy and carefree.
It also makes me think of Anne of Green Gables, it being her married name.
And the river in Suffolk.

Heavenlyhoumous · 26/05/2024 21:05

Haha! No, me neither.

Blythe Duff was in Taggart.

Justmemyselfandi999 · 26/05/2024 21:16

Lovely name

SilverSimca · 26/05/2024 21:20

It would be good if she was born on a Sunday, as well.

Happysallie · 26/05/2024 21:23

Sunday’s child is Bonnie and blithe!

My personal reticence is that I’m from the North East and there is a town called Blyth.

captureitrememberit · 26/05/2024 21:25

Where do you live? Blyth is a (not very nice) town in Northumberland and it would always have that connotation to me. You wouldn't be able to call a child that around here without problems, definitely not.

Coming to say this, and some people consider it to be a shit hole!

BingoMarieHeeler · 26/05/2024 21:27

God I adore Blythe. It was on our list but DH wouldn’t go for it. It means happy doesn’t it, not indifferent? Bonnie and Blythe and good and gay?

Melonportal · 26/05/2024 21:31

Also a no for me because of the town.

hjrl · 26/05/2024 21:33

I like it. Research its history. We are scotland so to me it means gypsies, the family name of the last king.

Lovely meaning and history.

Edenmum2 · 26/05/2024 21:34

I also think of it as meaning a bit 'couldn't care less'

'A blythe disregard...' comes to mind

shoofly · 26/05/2024 21:36

The only Blythe I've ever met was male. Lovely guy tbh

IDontLikeMondays88 · 26/05/2024 21:37

this was a front runner for me when I was pregnant. When I canvassed opinion here everyone mentioned the town but tbh I am from Scotland and have never heard of the town.
love it

ToffeenutLatte · 26/05/2024 21:50

I absolutely love it, had it on my list for DD.
Never heard of the town until just now, I'm down on the south coast so that connection wouldn't bother me at all.

Heavenlyhoumous · 26/05/2024 21:54

Thank you, it's not, more puritan names like Prudence and Constance. I like Ruth and old testament names. That could be the way to go.
