Last name Smith.

If he's late he'll potentially be a Leo star sign if that impacts choice 😂

Initially we were quite set on Eddie but I keep wavering, my grandmother has already said she'll call him Teddy as well which I don't want to be taken up by anyone else, a pet name from her is fine but I would really want him just being called Eddie in general.

I really like both names, but Edward - Eddie just edges it for me. I think you can easily encourage Eddie instead of Teddy outside of your family.

goldenretrievermum5 · 15/05/2024 17:18

Edward - classic and really nice nickname potential

Not a fan of Leo - never met a nice one, they’re all incredibly naughty! (Nice Leos I am certain you are out there too)

With SUCH a common surname I'd not choose such a popular first name. There must be hundreds of Edward Smiths out there..

I'd have a look outside the top 100

We've been through soooo many names, my DH is very much a classic name sort of person, I like the slightly more edgier ones but he is really not a fan, managed to get a bit more of an unusual one through for our DD but nothing like that is working for dh!

Go with Eddie, short for Edward. Add something a bit more edgy and unusual as a middle name.

Mrscharlieeeee · 15/05/2024 18:51

I'd use Edison NN Eddie

He'll have two middle names, one is my dads name and the other is DH's brother who sadly passed away a while ago and his name was quite unusual!

DH is not a fan 😂 I had suggested this, also not liking Edwin or Edmund either

Edward. With a surname like Smith he can at least go for one of the more interesting Edward nn’s (like Bear, Woody, Ward etc) if he wants to stand out when older for any reason. Leo is a bit more limiting. Though I must admit with a short, simple surname that’s commonplace I’d possibly go for something more unusual but still very classic and traditional like Nathaniel or Maximilian or something.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/05/2024 19:23

Btw I love that you’re giving him two family middle names ❤️

BoleynMemories13 · 15/05/2024 20:33

I much prefer Leo. Leo is cool. It's current, yet traditional at the same time. Eddie feels so dull in comparison.

Edward has never been a favourite of mine, mainly because I really dislike Eddie (personally). My preferred shortening for Edward is Ted.

Obviously it's up to you though.

shoopshoopdedoo · 15/05/2024 20:39

I love both Edward and Leo. So, not v helpful!

MeanLeanRunnerbean · 15/05/2024 20:42

I like both!

If you wanted a longer/more unusual name (where I live both names are used a lot, which I personally take as validation that they're fab names, but understand it's sometimes taken as a draw back) you could go with

Edgar
Edwin
Theodore

Leonardo
Leander
Leonidas

Nellieinthebarn · 15/05/2024 20:43

I like Edward, and all the nicknames that go with it. Eddie, Ed, Ted, Teddy, Ned, Ward. Leo is a nice name, but just Leo.

Thank you! My DD also has mine and mums middle name so having that family connection is very important to me ❤️

Weirdly its all the nn options that are making me question it 😂 because some I like and some I don't. My dds name is a name that has no nn because it's quite short and I liked that, I think that's why I initially edged towards Leo because he will only be Leo, but then his preference might be for a choice of nn when he's older. Decisions decisions!

I have a Leo and I love it (he's not even a Leo sign!) So obviously that's what I'd choose/vote 😊

Greenme · 15/05/2024 22:21

I have an Edward and no one shortens his name, although someone tried to keep calling him Eddie when he was about 6 and he politely but firmly told them ‘my name is Edward.’

I know a teenage Leo but I’m not keen on it.

Lakelandmumofthree · 15/05/2024 22:26

Love an earlier suggestion of Theo, sounds classic yet cool, really suits your surname too.

RogueFemale · 18/05/2024 01:54

Edward is great, but not the nicknames of it.

TheWalkingEyebag · 18/05/2024 02:03

We have an Edward so biased there. He currently goes by Teddy but we like that he has the option of loads of different nicknames as he grows up and enters different phases of life. I also love Leo. I know two who were born in the last month, same middle name too! It’s very cute!

Charlie2121 · 18/05/2024 02:39

When I hear the name Teddy Smith I think of the Krays. He was one of their mob and had a homosexual affair with Ronnie.

This may be recency bias though as I watched a documentary about them a week or 2 ago so it might not be in the public psyche quite as much as it is mine at the moment.

pinkmags · 18/05/2024 07:52

Edward, Ed, Eddie.... not sure what the other loads are, nor why someone would need so many name options..?

What a great name sake 😂 I now really don't want him going by teddy 😅
