What's your opinion?

Barrel maker ?
Seems an odd thing to call a child.

But I don't like surnames as first names generally.

ManilowBarry · 30/05/2024 00:31

If he grows up to be a short arse he'll be called Mini Cooper.

Sushilover14 · 30/05/2024 00:32

Awful. Sorry

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/05/2024 00:36

Puts me in mind of Billy Connolly talking about how arty types at BBC Scotland all had surnames for first names. Crawford, Finlay, Bailey, etc.

Its a surname.

SnowFrogJelly · 30/05/2024 00:38

Awful

DramaAlpaca · 30/05/2024 00:38

I don't like how it sounds or how it looks written down, so it's a big no from me.

I absolutely love the name Cooper! As PP said, a nickname of coop is also lovely.

I have dogs and chickens. Coop for me would be picking up dog shit (poop scoop) or putting away the hens. I know people like to say you can get bullied for any name, but naming a child after a chicken house or picking up dog shit is beyond asking for it

Phantasmagorically · 30/05/2024 09:26

No one's getting bullied for being called Cooper. Come on now.

mimiscards · 30/05/2024 09:35

It sounds nice but the double 'oo' doesn't appeal to me in any name and I'm not sure why.

It also strikes me as a surname but it is definitely not an awful name. If you like it, use it!

user1492757084 · 30/05/2024 09:51

It's a nice name for parents to use if they like the surname type names ..

It's very "American", that whole "giving a surname as a first name" thing.

It's one of those names that is trendy for a couple of years, and then goes back to being names for dogs and weird Americans.

SatinHeart · 30/05/2024 14:28

I don't actually mind the surnames as firstnames trend, but tbh there are quite a few nicer ones around including several from @user1492757084's list.

I know two Coopers, both are spaniels.

GreatTheCat · 30/05/2024 14:47

Jack is a surname!
I like Cooper, it's not my favourite name but it's middle ground.

IDontKnowMargot · 30/05/2024 15:09

I have a Cooper. Coops for short. I love the name, so does he.

BinkyBeaufort · 30/05/2024 15:40

It's what we call our local pub. Named after a barrel-maker.

IsThePopeCatholic · 30/05/2024 15:44

It’s a bit try-hard.

Grinchinlaws · 31/05/2024 10:49

Really dislike surnames as first names anyway, but especially this one- I don’t think it sounds nice.

SuperSharpShooter · 31/05/2024 11:00

I like it OP, it's a lovely name and Coop is a good nickname ... It was on my list for both boys. Vetoed by other half for all the daft reasons listed above.
Funnily enough, first born was given a dogs name (whatever that means 🤷) It was only old people who thought this and was not a 'common' boys nam. But now 17yrs on, it's been a long while since someone has said 'we had a dog called ) and his name was in the top ten for 2023, due to a popular TV character.
Trends change, pick the name you love OP. Enjoy your baby boy!

Oh yes they are! An acquaintance has Cooper as a surname and her kids get called pooperscooper Cooper.
They hate it as a surname, I can't imagine how bad it would be as a first name!

Cathbrownlow · 31/05/2024 11:11

Reminds me of Sheldon Cooper. Yep, it's a horrible name for a first name.

lozrox90 · 31/05/2024 11:26

My 3 year old DS is called Cooper, Coops for short. I love it 😊

CurlewKate · 31/05/2024 11:27

Not keen on Coop.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 31/05/2024 11:33

OutOfTheHouse · 11/05/2024 17:39

It’s a bit old hat. I teach primary and there are a lot of Coopers. They are mainly 10 years old or so.

This. The oldest Cooper I know is 14 and the youngest is 1.

I guarantee your child will have other kids in his class with the same name.

RogueFemale · 11/05/2024 17:37

Why would you name a baby after a person whose job is making barrels?

Edited

Why not? You could say similar about loads of names. Many, many surnames and some first names have original meanings related to jobs or professions, but now they are just names.

FayCarew · 31/05/2024 11:49

Like what? I can only think of Carter, Tyler, Piper, Parker, Taylor, Harper, Hunter and Cooper

Clark, Bailey, Archer, Fletcher, Chandler are ones too.

It's not a lot though
