Middle name to go with Ava...

Ava is definite first name if it's a girl, and surname is a common one-syllable name (think Clark, Green, Jones type names). I wanted a middle name linked to someone on my side of the family (grandmother, for instance), but can't find one I like. The main options so far are:

Ava Charlotte
Ava Pearl
Ava Clementine (not linked to family, just like the name!)

Any thoghts? Or other suggestions?

Clementine doesn't scan to me. Think you need one syllable ike say Grace.
Ava Grace Bloggs type of thing.

Spink · 03/04/2008 12:08

this is probably a really silly thought ,but I do wonder about having a name that is also an object (pearl, clementine).. there will always be the joker who pronounces ava like "have a" in a cockney kind of way.
So. Ava Clementine might sound like you are flogging someone some fruit.

I like Ava Charlotte.
How about
Ava Grace
Ava Katherine
Ava Sophie
Ava Emmeline

Ava is lovely by the way

Ava Marie
Ava Lucy
Ava Louisa
Ava Beatrice
Ava Penelope
Ava Roae
Ava May/Mae/Rae

I would stay away from any nouns tbh as written down it looks like 'have a' so therefore Ava Pearl kind of reads 'have a pearl' iykwim.

I like the others though.

Also like Katisha's suggestion of Grace.

Others could be:

Ava Louise
Ava Claire
Ava May
Ava Nicole

I have not even thought about 'have a'! It's amazing the things you don't spot, even after ataring at the name, all initials combinations and trying to put yourself in the mind of a mocking 11 year old.

I like Ava Grace and Ava Katherine, but thought it might look like I had a hollywood starlets obsession...

Weirdly I like Ava Beatrice, which is not a name that would ever occur to me.

I'm pleased you all think a short middle name would be ok - I was worried I should go for a longer one in order to balance out the ridiculously short first and surnames!

Any more suggestions, feel free to keep them coming...

A long middle name ending in "a" works well rythmically:
Ava Francesca Clark
Ava Raffaella Smith
etc

tortoiseSHELL · 03/04/2008 12:36

I instantly thought of Ava May which is very pretty. or Ava Jane.

I think I disagree about the middle name being longer to balance - I think the first name needs more weight and therefore a shorter middle name gives that. It also depends on how you are going to say Ava - if it was Ava May for example you might say it Aayva May with the emphasis on the first 'A' sound but if it was Ava Francesca then the Ava would be quicker with the emphasis on the 'che' of Francesca.

tortoiseSHELL · 03/04/2008 12:38

I have put that really badly! Let me see if I can put it graphically!

Ava May Clark

- _

Ava Francesca Smith

- --

Is that clearer?

tortoiseSHELL · 03/04/2008 12:38

No it isn't! (sorry will shut up now!) Don't know where those lines came from!!!

VersdeSociete · 03/04/2008 12:43

I see you point tS, but I still like the rhythm of short / long / short. My DD has a two syllable short first name followed by a 4-syllable middle name and er then a mess of surnames.

I don't think the first name loses out because the reality is everyone will actually call her Ava Clark. It's only at ceremonial occasions that she will get the full pomp of her lovely rhythmic names. I might add another one, eg
Ava Baptista May Clark.
But i may be barking and my children have an awful lot of names...

VersdeSociete · 03/04/2008 12:44

"your point"

mummyeme · 03/04/2008 12:50

Ava Jade

CrackerOfNuts · 03/04/2008 12:52

My cousins dd is Ava, and her middle name is Georgia.

itsMYmummy · 03/04/2008 12:58

I love either Ava mae, or Ava Rose. Ava's beautiful it is my dd's name, never once had a negative response! good luck. By the way Ava is the name of a strawberry, which you can buy in sainsbo's, it is now dd's nickname!

hopefully · 03/04/2008 13:59

Ha, I never knew about the strawberry connection! I'm loving

Ava May/Mae
Ava Beatrice
Ava RoseAva Charlotte

I do understand what you mean about the short and long names, TortoiseSHELL! I think long or short would be fine, as long as it's the RIGHT name.

VersdeSociete, I have thought and thought about 2 middle names. I would like it, but think DP might find it a bit poncey (saying that, I have free rein over the middle name, as it is getting his surname!) Anyone think 2 middle names is unreasonable?

Man, I always thought people who thought this much about a middle name were bonkers, as it never gets used, but it really is a concern!
